If Alternate-Frank is such a hard-hearted jerk (as Alternate-Svetlana describes him), how did Alternate-Ramsey ever become friends with him?
Not exactly a goof, but what happened to Mentnor and Ballard in the alternate universe? They played a critical role in developing Backstep, along with Olga, but in this universe Olga died young and the other two aren't mentioned at all. So who developed Backstep from the alien power source? It's implied the alternate Talmadge did, but there's no indication he's ever been that capable as a scientist.
Frank: Don't be a butthead, Ramsey, although I do appreciate that about you.
Alternate-Hooter: They shot at us–-they killed Ramsey.
Alternate-Svetlana: They always wanted to kill Ramsey.
Frank: At least one thing's familiar.
Frank: (to Svetlana) Why is it every time we meet, you try to jump me?
Alternate-Ramsey: Come on dudes – let's party!
Alternate-Donovan: You know, if your uncle wasn't on the commission...
Alternate-Ramsey: Those if and buts will make you nuts.
When the execution is broadcast on the giant tv screen we see live spelled backwards which is "evil". That's what the characters in the alternate reality have become.
Stephanie Romanov was also in "Sister's Keeper" #28 playing the same role.
A subtle allusion to The Wizard of Oz. Frank Baum's classic was the basis for the phrase, "We're not in Kansas anymore" referring to the alternate universe in which Dorothy found herself after the tornado swept her away. In a way, the sphere is the tornado which swept Parker into the alternate universe where familiar faces were imbued with different personalities.
The concept of mirror universes and evil doppelgangers is a popular one in s.f. TV shows. The best known one is probably the Star Trek episode "Mirror Mirror" (and its sequels on Deep Space Nine). However, this episode bears a strong resemblance to the Doctor Who episode "Inferno." Talmadge, like Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, gets a scar on his head and becomes a sadist, the other sadist Donovan turns out to be a coward and gets shot at the end, there's a helpful young man (like Hooter) who helps the Doctor in both universes, a female associate of the Doctor's is suspicious of him but ultimately helps him (like Svetlana), and both feature a jump to an alternate universe via a power overload in a time-traveling machine.
