In 1979, a woman, Mary Ann, abandons her most recent jerk of a boyfriend on a drug exchange, drives off, and dies in a car crash. In the present at Backstep, a train derails and contaminates the Colorado River with 13 tons of nuclear waste but Ballard warns that solar flares make things dangerous. They go ahead anyway and Frank picks up Mary Ann's dying soul – he stops the derailment as Mary Ann materializes in living condition in the present. Worse, some kind of black hole has attached itself to the sphere and is rapidly devouring everything . . . and it's growing. Ballard figures out that Mary Ann's missing soul is causing the imbalance, and Frank ducks the retrieval teams to get Mary Ann back with her daughter Tara, who is following the same path with crooks as her mother. Mary Ann intervenes and gets captured and taken with her daughter into a gun deal gone bad – Frank follows and rescues them, and after reconciling with daughter Mary Ann goes back into the void.
