Episode Summary

Annie is rushed to the hospital when the time comes to give birth to the twins. During a difficult labor, Eric and Annie are forced to accept help from a source that they originally did not want. Meanwhile, the kids spend the day hanging around the waiting room, trying to keep their minds occupied. In an attempt to find something to do, Matt debates whether or not to donate blood. Lucy considers ending her relationship with Jordan, then confides in Mary the reason why she started dating him in the first place. Ruthie tries (but not very hard) to accept that she is becoming a big sister, and Simon spends most of the day in the hospital chapel, praying feverishly for baby brothers.moreless

  • Happy Birthday Sam and David!!!!

In honor of Sam and David's birthday (they're 12 today) I decided to review this episode. I didn't watch much 7th Heaven back when this episode first aired, but I do remember watching this episode and a few other season 3 episodes before officially watching the show beginning with season 4. This was a great episode. I love having all the kids waiting around to meet their little brothers for the first time. It reminds me of how excited and nervous I was waiting for my mom to have my little brother. Like Ruthie I was 8 (or actually a couple months away from being 8) and was nervous. I was nervous because I was an only child and didn't know what my new life as a big sister would be like.

I felt bad for Lucy when she broke up with Jordan, but I never really liked him. I can't believe that this Mary who said she couldn't wait to be a mother is the same person who 6 years later would give up her rights to her son. And I can't believe that Matt who was terrified of hospitals and doctors would go to medical school.

Simon was my favorite in this episode. I love that he so badly wanted little brothers that he went to the chapel and prayed for it. I know this is long, but I have one more thought. I loved the Mary Tyler Moore song. I loved watching that show on Nick @ Nite when I was kid.moreless
  • Sam and David are born!

Annie is in labor and everyone is waiting at the hospital. It's also Valentine's Day. Lucy decides to break up with Jordan. Simon prays that the twins are boys. Matt gives blood after Simon inspires him to overcome his fear. Annie asks for Dr. Hastings, the doctor who almost killed Matt during the birth. Happy is left alone with the door open and lots of animals come into the Camden home. Annie refuses to have a C section. Samuel (Sam) and David Camden are born! Everyone sings "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" theme song as it is a tradition in the family.

This was a great episode! A very special one! Catherine Hicks's acting was incredible! She was really funny with her sarcastic comments and stuff! This episode gets a 10 out of 10!moreless
  • I loved this episode...one of the best Valentine's episodes, really nice and warm episode, and great to watch, and very memorable. I also thought that the ending was brilliant, and gives me a really nice feeling to watch itmoreless

While in labor with the twins, Annie decides aganist her planned sea-section, though the doctors persuade it, and instead give birth normally. Meanwhile, the kids are hanging around the hospital, some with their own situations. Matt becomes nervous when he is going to give blood after Eric suggests it to give him something to do (not really meaning that he should), Simon continually prays for the babies to be twin boys, and Lucy decides it's time to break up with Jordan. Annie unexpectedly asks for Dr. Hastings to deliver the babies. At the end of the episode, the babies are born, twin boys named Samuel and David. The episode concludes with the whole family singing to Annie and the twins, the Mary Tyler Moore song, 'Love Is All Around', a tradition in whcich they always sing when a new baby, or babies, are born into the family. the which includes a flashback of young Matt, beginning the tradition. And Happy has some fun with nobody home. I LOVED this episode! One of the best ones ever! I loved the whole thing, and the twins were adorable. Plus all the storylines were captivating, the actors played well, and everything was enjoyable. Matt kept on making me laugh, and I liked how even though there was a family thing going on, Lucy still had time for boy-drama! Plus, I could watch the ending over and over...it was so intense, and warm, and really nice to watch...it also got a glimpse of all the Camden family together, all getting along, and totally problem-free. Plus, I loved the Simon flashback. And the Happy scenes were cute!moreless
  • this episode is absolutely amazing. i can't even describe the feeling. it's, it's just wonderful. amazing. bravo to the actors. love it.

this episode is absolutely amazing. it's a wonderful episode, because our favourite family is getting a-two new additions to the family. after the 3-month crisis, where annie couldn't fit into her pants, and wore eric's, where she couldn't stand/have chicken, through the pregnancy project, and the "horrible" thought of having Dr. Hastings deliver, we finally get to meet the new additions, Samuel and David. this one is amazing. i'm glad to have seen it. congratulations to the camdens for sam and david, congrats to the actors who starred in this episode, for making it such a great one, and thank you, thank you, thank you for this amazing show. i hope you come back for a 12th season!!!!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • If you look closely throughout this episode you can see Ruthie's necklace flip back and forth. In one scene the red part is on the left side of her neck and in the next scene it's on the right.

    • In the flashback scene at the end of the episode when Matt is watching Mary Tyler Moore with his grandmother he is holding the same bunny rabbit that Annie uses during labor.

    • At the end of this incredibly wonderful episode, the Camden family sing the theme song from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" (Annie's favorie show) to their newborn family members, Sam & David. A tradtion started by Matt when Mary was born.

    • In the beginning of the episode, Ruthie is wearing a tan, sleeveless jacket over a yellow shirt with a dragon on it. When Ruthie and Mary are talking in the hall, Ruthie is wearing a pink shirt with flowers on it over the yellow shirt with the dragon. Then, when Lucy comes back from breaking up with Jordan, Ruthie's wearing the tan jacket again.

    • In the episode "All That Jazz", Annie states on the phone that she will be having a scheduled C-section, why in this episode would she refuse to have one?

    • At the end of the episode, the whole family is in the
hospital room and they brought two cupcakes and two
birthday hats. Mary separates the two hats and places them
on the bed tray next to the cupcakes, which Matt lights.
Then there is a shot of Annie and Eric smiling, and then
back to Mary, who again separates the two hats and puts
      them on the tray.

  • QUOTES (16)

    • Simon: (praying) If you ever wanted to give me something great on Valentine's Day, well Lord this is the Valentine's Day to do it. Those babies have to be boys. They have to be. If they're not, well then this is the last day of my life. And don't get me wrong, I love and respect all the Camden women. Mary is a great older sister. She taught me everything a guy would ever want to know about sports, and it's probably a good thing because between chasing women and school, Matt doesn't have a lot of free time. And there's Lucy; smart, sassy, extremely emotional. I could deal with any woman after living with her. And Ruthie; I'm sure you got a big file on her. She gets me into a lot of trouble but... boy does she love life. And I love her. And I love Happy. Thanks for that, you do good work. She's a girl dog you know. And it goes without saying that I love Mom too. She's the greatest mom ever. So even if the twins aren't boys, but I hope they are, just make her safe, because we couldn't do without her. Speaking of which say hello to Grandma Jenny. Tell her we'll be singing that song later. The one that she taught Matt to sing to Mom when they brought Mary from the hospital. Well that's it, that's everything. A little recap; I love women but… I want brothers. And that's the God's honest truth. Sorry. Amen. Or is it Awomen.

    • Annie: (to Eric during labor) Stop touching me! That's what got us in this situation in the first place.

    • Lucy: I've realized that Jordan and I really don't have that much in common.
Mary: And you're just realizing that now?
Lucy: No. I've known for a long time, but I didn't want to say anything because A, He's really cute. And two, I stole him away from you, and frankly, that felt good. Really good.
Mary: Why would stealing something away from me make you feel good?

    • Matt: Why are you crying?
Lucy: Because that's what I do.

    • Matt: (to Ruthie) You know, I remember the day you were born. I was Simon's age, and I was a little nervous.
Ruthie: Even more nervous than you are now?
Matt: Oh, much more. You know, a new baby can be scary, but it's also a lot of fun. It's going to be so great for you when you get to hold those babies for the first time. I couldn't wait to hold you. In fact, there was a big fight over who got to hold you first.
Ruthie: I'm not surprised--I must have been pretty cute!

    • Eric: Really, today is the first day of the rest of your lives. Because once your mom has twins, the old Camden family will cease to exist and in it's place will be a new Camden family, a family with nine people in it.
Mary: Yeah but only two bathrooms.

    • Ruthie: I'm never having babies. When I grow up, I'm going to be an astronaut and live in space. Earth is starting to bore me.
Mary: Well, you'd make a very good astronaut. That is a great dream.
      Ruthie: Thanks!
Mary: And don't let anyone ever talk you out of your dream.
      Ruthie: Like Simon?
      Mary: Like anybody.
Ruthie: What if I change my mind? Can I be an astronaut and a mommy?
Mary: Yeah, there are women astronauts who are mommies, so you can do both, or neither, or one or the other. Women can do anything that men can do.
Ruthie: But men can't have babies.
Mary: Right, but it's hard to have babies without them.

    • Lucy: (about her mom and the pain medication) I think they gave her a little too much. She kept calling me Ruthie.
Eric: Honey, in the world of childbirth there is no such thing as too much pain medicine.

    • Annie: What is that, peanuts and chocolate? I'm up here giving birth to twins, and you're going on a snack break? I thought you were going to the bathroom!
Eric: Well, there's a vending machine around the corner.

    • Mary: Having a baby is a lot of things. It's a gift. It's a blessing. It's a miracle. But it is not a curse!
Matt: Have you been in that birthing room recently?
Mary: Yes, and I cannot wait to give birth myself. I mean, it might be the most painful thing in life, but being willing to suffer often brings great rewards.

    • Annie: Are my babies going to be okay?
Dr. Hastings: I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure that they are.

    • Annie: I want you to find Doctor Hastings for me.
Eric: The guy who almost killed Matt? That Doctor Hastings?
Annie: No, the Doctor Hastings who runs the ferris wheel at the carnival. Find Dr. Hastings!

    • Matt: Hey, what's wrong Luce?
Mary: Just give her a little space, okay? She just broke up with Jordan.
Ruthie: Another one bites the dust!

    • Ruthie: (to Lucy) Here's how I see it. I hated Jimmy Moon. He was just okay. I liked Rod a little bit. He was decent. I liked Jordan a lot. He was a good guy. So I bet the next one will be great and I'll be crazy about him. You deserve great.

    • Matt: Something happened to you when you cut your hair.
      Mary: Bye bye blood boy.

    • Annie: (to the rest of the family) I'd like you all to meet Sam and David, your new brothers.
      Simon: Thank you!
