Ruthie is watching cartoons in the living room and when her mother stands next to her, she tells Annie that she is blocking Hoowie, Ruthie's imaginary friend. Annie then gets a call from Rachel, her old high school friend. Who tells Annie that she is divorced and moved near her. Simon changes the channel and Ruthie complains to her mother, but she is on the phone, then screams when Simon sits on Hoowie and Hoowie runs away.
Annie gets dressed up to go see her friend. When Rachel shows up, Matt answers the door, and then Rachel is introduced to the family. Rachel doesn't have a car, so they bring the Camden's car. Ruthie is sad that Hoowie isn't there anymore and when Simon pretends that he showed back up, Ruthie tests his knowledge about how Hoowie looks and when Simon fails, Ruthie gets mad at him. At dinner, Rachel is describing about her two failed marriages and Annie describes her college experience. Suzanne shows up in Lucy's room and tells her that her father is helping her mom get a better job so that they can find a better job.
Simon asks his father for help with the Hoowie problem, then Ruthie asks her father for a party for Hoowie's departure. Eric tells her to wait a while to see if he returns and Ruthie tells them that Hoowie does what he says he is going to do and also that Hoowie is married. Hoowie's wife is an astronaut and is away for a while, which is why Hoowie is alone all of the time. Matt and Mary play basketball and discuss possible dates for Rachel. After betting on basketball, it is decided that Mary will set her up on a date with her basketball coach. Lucy and Suzanne tell Eric that her mother has an interview at a car dealership and mentions that she would be leaving Glenoak, but Suzanne looks confused and Eric tells her that he must be mistaken and he was thinking of a different car dealership. Matt volunteers to take Suzanne home and Suzanne says that she wants to go home to ask her mother about the car dealership job to see if they would have to move. As they are walking out of the house, Rachel and Suzanne are introduced, then Rachel asks if Matt could take her home. Annie tells Eric that she had a great time with Rachel and that Rachel need to borrow the car tomorrow. Eric announces his dislike for Rachel. At Rachel's house, she can't find her keys and when they fall out her purse, Matt and Rachel both bend down to pick them up and Rachel tries to kiss him. Matt quickly pulls away and Rachel says that just because she is his mother's friend doesn't mean that they can't go out. Rachel tells him that she will bring him out the next night.
At breakfast, Rachel tells Annie that she is taking Matt to see a band at night and Annie says that she doesn't like the night, but Mary volunteers to go when Rachel tells them that she is not taking them to a bar to see the band. Matt quickly accepts Mary's offer to go along, so Annie and Eric agree. Lucy complains about Suzanne's moving and says that she can't move. Simon tries to help Ruthie with Hoowie. At school, Suzanne is at school and Lucy gets worried. Matt talks to Mary about not setting Rachel up with her coach. Simon and Ruthie set up a trap to lure Hoowie back, Ruthie says that Hoowie is gone and is not coming back. Lucy calls Suzanne at home and she tells her that the car dealership is 2 hours away from Glenoak and that she will be moving. They looked for apartments during the day, which is why she wasn't at school. Matt and Mary are with Rachel at the club and they meet up with Tim, a man that Rachel knows that is in the band. Tim tells them that their singer is absent and they needs someone to fill in so Mary is volunteered to sing with them. She does so and does a great job. While Mary is singing, Rachel turns to Matt for a dance and drags him on the dance floor. When they get home, Mary yells at Matt for essentially going on a date with their mother's friend. They don't notice, but Eric heard the whole conversation and interrupts their talk. Eric tells Mary to go upstairs and Eric and Matt discuss the situation. Matt tells him that she is the aggressor and not him. Matt has no idea what to do and is comforted by a story about Eric's own crush on his mother's friend. They decide not to tell Annie since Eric said that he didn't tell his own mother. Eric tells Matt that there can be no relationship with Rachel.
In the morning, Mary tells her parents that she sang with a band last night and that they want her to join them while their singer is sick. Annie and Eric decide to talk about it. Annie says that she doesn't want her daughter singing, but Eric says that they can go to the coffee house and watch Mary sing. Simon gives up on their trap to lure Hoowie back, so Ruthie asks for the party and tells Eric that Hoowie liked Eric the best. Lucy tells Annie that she wants to ease off on her relationship with Suzanne, but Annie tells her to not do that and that she will see to it that they see each other on the weekends. Lucy asks her about her friendship with Suzanne and how they grew apart. Ruthie tells her mother that she wants ice cream for the party tonight. At school, Lucy gives the lunch that her mother made for Suzanne to her and finds out that her mother got the job and they are moving over the weekend. Lucy asks Suzanne to go to the party with her, but Suzanne is seeing her father and can't go to the party. Rachel shows up to do her laundry and Annie tells her that she wants to talk to her about last night. Rachel starts saying that it is not her fault that Matt has a crush on her, but Annie wanted to talk about Mary singing in the band. Annie asks Rachel about why she thought that Matt had a crush on her and Rachel tells her that Matt made a pass at her.
While getting ready for the party, Matt tells Annie that he will pick up Rachel, but Annie says that she will bring Mary and pick up Rachel. Annie accuses Matt of making a pass at Rachel and Matt apologizes and Annie tells him that he will not be going to the coffee house. Ruthie is anxious about the party and Simon tells her that after the party, Hoowie will definitely be gone. While Mary is trying to figure out what to wear, Lucy is complaining about Suzanne leaving. When Matt and Mary tell Lucy to leave so that they can talk, she gets upset and storms out. Matt tells Mary that Rachel lied about Matt hitting on her and that he didn't stick up for himself. Mary gets mad at Matt for not telling Annie the truth. When their father walks in the room, Mary yells at him about them taking Mary to the coffee house and not Matt, she doesn't want her parents there. Eric tells Matt that he needs to tell his mother the truth about Rachel being the aggressor toward Matt. Simon walks in and tells them that it is time for the party.
Suzanne shows up for the party because she wanted to spend time with Lucy. Eric officiates the good bye party for Hoowie and gives anecdotes about Hoowie's friendship with Ruthie. During Eric's sermon, he brings in the situation between Matt and Rachel by paralleling them with Ruthie and Hoowie's friendship. During his speech, Ruthie jumps up and exclaims that Hoowie just showed up and Ruthie explained his absence. When they break for ice cream, Rachel brings Annie into the kitchen and tells Annie the truth about her and Matt. She then tells Annie that she is sorry, but felt old and it was nice to have a younger man think that she is pretty. Annie yells at her and tells her to apologize to Matt and to straighten out her life before she finds a man to try to straighten out her life. Annie tells her that friends are supposed to tell each other the truth. Annie tells Matt to talk to Rachel and then apologizes. Suzanne tells Lucy that she kissed Jimmy Moon and assumes that Jimmy already told Lucy about it, but since it was in kindergarten, Lucy forgave her. Eric and Annie leave to bring Mary to the coffee shop. Rachel apologizes to Matt and Matt tells her to not give up and that she will find a good man. When Eric and Annie are at the coffee house listening to Mary, a man voices his opinion that Mary is hot, but Eric and Annie overhear and tell him that she is only 14 and that they are her parents. The man then tells them that he would never let his 14-year old daughter sing at a coffee house and it is even worse that he is a minister. They decide to enjoy themselves anyway and applaud Mary.
