Eric and the family arrive home after the church, not having any idea where Matt is and why he didn't come to church. The whole family has no idea where he is and while Simon is petting Happy to see if she has had her puppies yet, Matt calls. Matt tells his father that he is not doing anything bad like the last time when he lost his driving privileges for three weeks. Eric explains to the family that he is not in trouble and he is trying to trust Matt. Lucy asks what they will be doing for her 13th birthday and suggests a boy-girl party. When Eric tells her that she is too young, Lucy runs off. Eric is over at Mrs. Bink's house helping her around the house and thanks Matt for not telling his father where he is. Mrs. Bink makes Matt agree to never tell his father since once an older person needs help, people move them into a place where they can get help, a nursing home.
At home, Simon is trying to find Happy and walks into Lucy's room when she is on the phone with Jimmy Moon to try to find Happy. Lucy complains about her parents not letting her have a party and when Lucy explains her family's present policy, Jimmy thinks that this is his opportunity to not have to give Lucy a gift. Simon confronts his parents about the missing Happy, but they don't know where she is either, but Simon hears Happy barking and opens the door to let her in. Simon yells at Matt for letting Happy out and being irresponsible. Simon thinks that Happy has to go to the hospital and he wants to be there for her, but Eric and Annie explain that dogs know what they are doing and don't need human intervention when they have puppies, but Simon just storms off upset. Eric gets upset when he tells Annie and Matt that he has to meet Steve, a church member, and matt has no clue who Steve is even though Steve has been attending the church for many years. Eric tells Annie that he needs a few tools for when he sees Steve, but Annie tells him that he has to stop breaking things, just to pay Steve to fix them. A boy, Dwight, is inviting everyone to his birthday party, but no one wants to come since he is not the most popular kid. Dwight is Jimmy's friend and when Dwight explains to Lucy that his party is on the same night as Lucy's birthday, he invites her, but she has a family dinner to attend. Dwight exclaims that her plans are horrible and Lucy feels upset that Jimmy is going to Dwight's party and not coming over for cake. At the church, Eric is "trying" to fix the gutter drain when Steve shows up to help him. Steve is upset that Eric is trying to help him out by breaking things just to give him a handout, but Eric tells him that he is trying to find Steve a job. A lady at the school's office tells Eric that he has an urgent message from his Aunt Gladys and he quickly calls her. When Mrs. Bink wants Matt to leave school to help her, Mary walks in and wants to leave school with Matt since it is a way to get out of school.
Matt and Mary arrive at Mrs. Bink's house and find her asleep, but think that she is dead and startle her. When she sees that they got there, she is startled by them coming over and confused about who Mary is. Mrs. Bink cannot remember why she called Matt, but when Matt gets concerned about her, he tells her that maybe she needs more help than Matt can provide for her. Mrs. Bink gets upset and tells him to leave, but Matt tells her that he will call her later. Outside, Matt tells Mary not to say anything to their parents. Dwight is over at the Camden's house trying to get Lucy to go to his party. Lucy gets worried about why Dwight is there and Simon is worried about Happy. When Dwight leaves, Lucy complains to Annie about the party and how the party will ruin her life. Annie asks for Matt and Mary's help in getting Lucy to go to the party, but they think that she wants to talk them about something else. Eric is confused about what to do with Steve and discussing things with Annie when Simon asks where Happy is since he can't find her again. Eric gets a phone call, but at that moment Happy begins to have her puppies. All of the kids stand around while she has her puppies. Eric walks in and tells them that he got a call from the school to ask how Aunt Gladys is doing. When everyone else, leaves Eric asks who lied to the school secretary, but Matt and Mary won't give up who they helped. Eric and Annie talk about what they will do with Matt and Mary and Annie suggests waiting to find out who they are helping, but Eric is not so excited about the idea. Simon and Ruthie are trying to figure out names to names the puppies. Lucy complains to Mary about the birthday party and how it will not be her party and it will ruin her life. Mary tries to reason with her, but Lucy doesn't want to listen.
Annie is trying to read the paper when Eric tells her that he will be going to Steve's house and then Simon is out of breath and explains that he was up all night with Happy making sure that the puppies eat. Annie explains that nature takes care of all of that and he shouldn't have to worry. When Annie answers the phone, it is Mrs. Bink and Matt tells his mom to get off of the phone. Mrs. Bink explains that she needs the money on the top shelf in a coffee can, but Matt doesn't want to skip school again, but she begs and pleads with him and then gets upset and hangs up the phone. Eric pulls up behind a van that turns out to be their home. Steve's family has been living in the van for a few days and Steve tells Eric that he has tried shelters and they don't have room. Eric offers his house, but Steve doesn't want to lose his pride and tells Eric to have faith that he will find a job. Mrs. Bink climbs on a ladder to get the coffee can, but she falls and cries out for someone to help her. At dinner, Simon and Ruthie are excused to help Happy. Eric asks if she is going to the party, but Lucy tells him that since she can't have her own party, she doesn't want to go to someone else's. Eric gets mad and tells everyone that he is tired of everyone not being grateful for what they have. When Mary explains that she tried, Matt admits that he didn't try to persuade Lucy to go to the party, but told Mary to do it.
Eric enters Lucy's room and tells her about Steve's family and all that they wanted was a prayer. Lucy tells him that she feels terrible, but when Eric tries to say that it is his fault, Lucy's tells him that he has taught her the right things, but she hasn't fully learned them yet. Matt receives a call from the hospital about Mrs. Bink and Matt won't tell Eric or Annie about her, but Matt eventually tell them what has been happening. Matt explains that Mrs. Bink didn't want anyone to know that she needed help. Eric offers to go to the hospital with Matt to talk to the doctor. Ruthie doesn't think that the puppies are that exciting. Simon explains that they have to give the puppies away and try to give them away together so they don't have to be separated. Eric talks to the doctor about Mrs. Bink's declining health and not feeling useful. Eric talks to Mrs. Bink while Eric listens in on the conversation. Mrs. Bink realizes that Eric is there and asks him to join the conversation and sings Matt's praises for taking care of her. Eric asks Mrs. Bink to hire Steve to help her around the house and she agrees.
At school, Jimmy tells Lucy Happy Birthday and explains that the party was really for her and they called it off since she wasn't going to attend. Lucy invites Jimmy and Dwight to her house, but Jimmy declines the offer. Matt shows up at Mrs. Bink's house where Steve is working on a ramp to Mrs. Bink's front door. Steve's mother helps Mrs. Bink with her medication. Mrs. Bink tells Matt that she is thankful for his help. Steve walks into the house and asks for money for the hardware store, but Mrs. Bink tells Steve that if he fixes up the apartment on top of the garage, then they could live there. Mrs. Bink explains that they are both victims of the reverend's prayers. When the family gets home from the dinner for Lucy's birthday, Lucy apologizes for being so inconsiderate. Annie suggests that they eat the cake in the living room, but when Lucy opens the door, Lucy's friends are there to throw her a party. The whole family dances at the party. While Lucy dances with Dwight, he admits that he has feelings for her, but she is flabbergasted and left speechless.
After the party, Lucy tells Mary that Dwight professed his love for her and may think that she likes him as a friend and will try to set him up. The rest of the family is outside the bedroom and burst in with their gifts. Ruthie gives her a Hoowie pass, Simon gives her 13 days of bed making free and announced that they gave the puppies away to Dwight, Matt and Mary gave her a teen survival kit and Mary's old diary, Eric gives her a picture of her and her dad right after she was born, and Lucy gives her a locket that her mother gave her when she turned 13. Lucy cries.
