    At the hospice, Ji-seok and Mi-yeon are struck speechless by Jeong-ran and Tae-hun’s unexpected appearance. Jeong-ran implores Ji-seok to return home. Mi-yeon watches as Ji-seok leaves with his wife, and Tae-hun follows her. Jeong-ran sheds angry tears when she finds out that Ji-seok’s mother knew all about her son being with Mi-yeon, but Ji-seok’s mother reasons that they should let him have his dying wish. While lying in her bed, Mi-yeon hears the clear sounds of a piano playing and bolts upright. She implores Tae-hun to take her to Ji-seok. Ji-seok coughs up blood and is carried off in an ambulance, as Mi-yeon watches with a blanched face. At the hospital, Ji-seok fails to regain consciousness. Jeong-ran coldly orders Tae-hun to take Mi-yeon away. With his eyes barely open, Ji-seok calls out Mi-yeon’s name and Jeong-ran looks at him with an expression of despair. She tells Mi-yeon to go into the room, and Mi-yeon tenderly caresses Ji-seok’s hand. Much improved, Ji-seok opens his eyes and smiles at Mi-yeon; she embraces him warmly. Ji-seok begs Mi-yeon to take him outside to see the sky; he tells her that he has never stopped loving her since the day he first met her in Jeju.moreless

    At the hospice, Ji-seok refuses to take Mi-yeon’s phone calls. The pain is so excruciating that it brings tears to his eyes. Ji-seok’s mother goes to Mi-yeon and asks her to visit Ji-seok at the hospice. Tae-hun, so drunk that he cannot even walk properly, runs into Deok-gu and Wal-suk. He suddenly grabs Deok-gu by the collar, but falls to the ground. Mi-yeon is surprised to see Tae-hun brought home on Deok-gu’s back. When Wal-suk asks her if something is the matter, she replies that she will go to the hospice to see Ji-seok. Tae-hun tells Mi-yeon that his company volunteers at a hospice and asks her to take part in their activities twice a week. Ji-seok cannot believe his eyes when he sees Mi-yeon alight from a bus and run toward him. Choked with tears, he barely gets out the words to ask her what she is doing there. After sending Mi-yeon to Ji-seok’s side, Tae-hun finds it impossible to concentrate on his work. Jeong-ran announces her decision to leave the gallery and explains the work to the rest of the staff. She calls Ji-seok’s mother and asks if there has been any word from Ji-seok. Mi-yeon takes Ji-seok into town, saying she will do everything that she couldn’t do for him during high school and college. Receiving Mi-yeon’s text message, Deok-gu and Byeong-chan go to visit Mi-yeon and Ji-seok.     Ji-seok is rushed to the hospital after collapsing at the airport. Mi-yeon, who has accompanied him, sits staring vacantly while he is in the operating room. Byeong-chan, finding Mi-yeon there instead of Jeong-ran, looks at her in surprise. Just at that moment, Jeong-ran comes along and glares at Mi-yeon. She tells Mi-yeon to leave, but Mi-yeon insists that she will stay until she finds out if Ji-seok is okay. Tae-hun, who has been watching the scene, drags Mi-yeon away. When Ji-seok regains consciousness, Jeong-ran demands to know when and where he met up with Mi-yeon. Baffled, Ji-seok asks her what happened after he passed out. Tae-hun asks Mi-yeon if she wants to go to Ji-seok; she answers yes, her voice tremulous with tears. Encountering Jeong-ran, Tae-hun tells her to let Ji-seok and Mi-yeon be, to her great surprise. Ji-seok turns his head at the sound of the hospital room door opening and is startled to see Tae-hun there. Tae-hun asks him if all he wants is to see Mi-yeon. Over dinner, Tae-hun tells Mi-yeon that she can see Ji-seok from now on, but that she must return to him once Ji-seok is dead. Ji-seok asks Byeong-chan to find him a good hospice, saying that he will give up seeing Mi-yeon but carry her in his heart.moreless

    In the bus headed for the airport, Mi-yeon explains to Tae-hun that Ji-seok does not have long to live, and that without Ji-seok she would not have been able to love Tae-hun either, but he turns away and declares that he cannot understand her. Arriving in Jeju, Ji-seok’s family drives along in a rental car. When a bus approaches from the opposite direction, Ji-seok recalls the first time he saw Mi-yeon. Tae-hun tells Mi-yeon to stay behind with her parents for a few days to get her feelings sorted out, and that he would be waiting for her. While playing with Hye-jin at his old high school, Ji-seok spots Mi-yeon’s father, but the latter does not see him. Tae-hun is shocked when he is told to submit his resignation. Ji-seok’s mother goes to see Byeong-chan and asks him about her son’s illness. After hearing that Ji-seok will die, she walks away in dejection, then turns around and starts hitting Byeong-chan. Mi-yeon’s father thanks Ji-seok for doing well for himself and strokes Hye-jin’s hair; Ji-seok bites back the tears as he watches. Mi-yeon’s father learns about Ji-seok’s condition from his wife, and soothes Mi-yeon. Before leaving Jeju, Ji-seok visits the places he used to go with Mi-yeon, and begins to cry out that he does not want to die.moreless

    Ji-seok washes his face alongside his daughter Hye-jin and shows him his paternal side. Hye-jin remarks that for her Christmas present, she would like to go on a date with Daddy. Wal-suk finds Mi-yeon sleeping at the studio and asks if Tae-hun has kicked her out. Hye-jin receives the dress Ji-seok sent her, and gleefully tries it on. Determined to treat his daughter like a young lady, Ji-seok takes her to see a musical then escorts her to a fancy restaurant. Tae-hun, who happens to be at the same restaurant with a client, is startled to see him. When Ji-seok suffers a sudden onslaught of pain and tries to take his medication, Tae-hun offers him a glass of water. Tae-hun goes to Mi-yeon’s studio. Packing up her things, he asks her to come back home. Mi-yeon tells him that she will grant him a divorce if he wants one. Jeong-ran goes to Ji-seok and opens her heart to him, but is struck speechless at the sight of his pain. Jeong-ran asks Byeong-chan if her husband is well enough to go to Jeju. Mi-yeon visits her home in Jeju, and her mother is puzzled to see her there all of a sudden. Tae-hun asks his boss to revoke his transfer to the States. He calls Mi-yeon’s mother and, discovering that Mi-yeon is there, announces that he is coming down also.moreless

    Ji-seok and Mi-yeon’s car speeds endlessly along the highway. Ji-seok longs to hold Mi-yeon’s hand, but grips the wheel instead. Mi-yeon offers to drive and the two change seats. Listening to carols on the radio, Ji-seok asks Mi-yeon what she wants to for Christmas. Jeong-ran goes to Mi-yeon’s old apartment. After knocking on the door for a while, she finds the keys and opens the door, but finds the apartment deserted. Waking up from sleep, Ji-seok goes to Mi-yeon as she stands gazing at the sea. He puts his arms around her and pulls her close. Anxious, Tae-hun tries to call Mi-yeon but her phone has been switched off. He glances at the clock in impatience. The following morning, Ji-seok takes his last remaining pill and prays that he will not collapse while Mi-yeon is with him. Jeong-ran calls Tae-hun and asks if Mi-yeon came home last night; she suggests that the two of them meet. While driving along the snowy road, the car swerves into a ditch and Ji-seok calls a tow truck. Inside the car, Ji-seok and Mi-yeon shiver with cold. Ji-seok begins to lose consciousness and falls into Mi-yeon’s arms. Holding him in her embrace, Mi-yeon tells him not to die because she loves him. Ji-seok comes to in the hospital room. He tells Byeong-chan that he can die happy now, and smiles at the thought of Mi-yeon.moreless

    Ji-seok gazes at Mi-yeon. With a smile, he tells her that he was hoping she would come. Mi-yeon smiles back at him. They walk side by side in silence. Outside Ji-seok’s building, Ji-seok hands her the keys to his apartment, remarking that he knows it has become difficult for her to go to her studio. Ji-seok is told by the dean to take a leave of absence, and packs up his things with a bitter expression on his face. Mi-yeon steps gingerly into Ji-seok’s empty apartment and looks around. Ji-seok finds that his apartment has been cleaned, and becomes choked with emotion. Jeong-ran is surprised to hear that Ji-seok has quit his job at the university, but covers it up by saying that she advised him to do so. Tae-hun hears his sisters speaking disapprovingly about Mi-yeon and quietly turns his back. Returning home after drinking, Tae-hun sits frozen without even taking his coat off. Mi-yeon prepares several days’ worth of food and stocks up the fridge, as if getting ready to leave. Ji-seok finds Mi-yeon in his apartment, and the two drink coffee together. Jeong-ran receives a phone call saying that there has been a minor car crash. She goes to find Ji-seok’s car, but becomes riveted to the spot when she sees Ji-seok and Mi-yeon walking out of the building together.moreless

    While putting away Tae-hun’s coat, Mi-yeon finds Ji-seok’s business card. Alarmed, she glances toward the bedroom. Mi-yeon and Tae-hun wordlessly eat their breakfast, an awkward and tense stillness hanging in the air. Ji-seok’s mother brings her things over to Jeong-ran’s apartment; Jeong-ran looks in exasperation at the mountain of luggage then turns her back. Mi-yeon runs into Tae-hun at a neighborhood bar and the two sit down to drink together. Mi-yeon asks Tae-hun why he cried the previous day, but Tae-hun dismisses it and avoids giving her an answer. While Mi-yeon steps out to wipe her tears, Tae-hun sees the text message Ji-seok sent her and deletes it. Jeong-ran learns that Ji-seok sought investment consultation from Tae-hun. Troubled, she goes to Tae-hun’s office; Tae-hun is surprised to see her. Remembering her fender bender with Tae-hun, Jeong-ran examines his face again. While talking with Tae-hun, she is unable to take her eyes off the picture of Mi-yeon sitting on his desk. After a while, she asks him if he knows a man named Hyeon Ji-seok. Ji-seok hears from Deok-gu about the building where Mi-yeon’s studio is and jumps to his feet, as if remembering something. Watching from across the street, Ji-seok sees Mi-yeon exiting the building.moreless

    After her meeting with Mi-yeon, Jeong-ran steels herself as she walks to her car. Lost in thought, Mi-yeon rides the elevator in a daze, only recovering her senses when she runs into Wal-suk on the first floor. Jeong-ran suggests to Ji-seok’s mother that she move into the apartment with them. Exiting the hospital, Ji-seok goes to the house where Mi-yeon used to live and reminisces about their past. Ji-seok tells the caretaker that he will move in the following week. Meanwhile, Mi-yeon tells Wal-suk about her meeting with Jeong-ran and confesses that she doesn’t know what to do. Tae-hun receives the news that his transfer to the U.S. has come through. He sets up a dinner date with Mi-yeon, telling her that he has a wonderful gift for her. Mi-yeon reads Ji-seok’s email telling her that he has been to her old house and lets out a deep sigh. While shopping for appliances with Deok-gu, Ji-seok is stricken with extreme pain and moved to the emergency room. He finds out that Jeong-ran met Mi-yeon and calls Mi-yeon out of concern. Tae-hun announces to Mi-yeon that they are moving to San Francisco, and Mi-yeon finds herself at a loss for words. Tae-hun is shocked to find out that Ji-seok has terminal pancreatic cancer.moreless

    Ji-seok gets out of Mi-yeon’s car, and Jeong-ran walks toward Mi-yeon. After Mi-yeon drives off, Jeong-ran asks Ji-seok if that was Ko Mi-yeon. Back at home, Tae-hun gazes blankly out the window, then gulps down a glass of water, but the glass slips from his hand and breaks. Ji-seok confesses to Jeong-ran that he met Mi-yeon again after finding out that he has cancer, telling her that he is sorry. But Jeong-ran asks if he isn’t lying about dying just to have an excuse to live with Mi-yeon. Appalled, Ji-seok leaves the house. Exiting Deok-gu’s house, Ji-seok runs into Wal-suk. Wal-suk warns him not to stir up Mi-yeon, who is living her own life. Tae-hun calls Mi-yeon and suggests that they see a movie, but Mi-yeon turns him down. While lost in troubled thoughts, Mi-yeon gets a call from Ji-seok. She spots Tae-hun’s coat button, which is on the verge of falling off. She asks him why he looks so pathetic as she gazes straight into his face. Tae-hun goes to his boss and requests a transfer to the U.S. office, saying that his wife wants to go to San Francisco. Jeong-ran calls Mi-yeon and asks to meet her; flustered, Mi-yeon hangs up the phone.moreless

    Ji-seok stands unmoving after hanging up the phone, and Tae-hun approaches Mi-yeon as she sits on the steps outside their apartment building. Wal-suk tells Mi-yeon that her relationship with Ji-seok might have been love before but that it is now adultery; Mi-yeon asks if it is still adultery if all she does is meet with him. Exiting Jeong-ran’s gallery, Ji-seok sees Mi-yeon getting on a bus just as he is about to drive away in his car. He gets out and runs after her. Sitting in her seat, Mi-yeon senses somebody sitting down next to her and is surprised to see Ji-seok there, out of breath after his sprint. The bus gradually empties except for them, and snow starts to fall outside the window. Ji-seok thanks Mi-yeon for forgiving him, as Mi-yeon gazes poignantly at him. Ji-seok goes to the hospital with Jeong-ran. He sits with lowered eyes, answering Byeong-chan’s questions with silence. He asks Jeong-ran to leave him be, since he is going to die anyway. Mi-yeon hovers around Ji-seok’s office and Ji-seok, who has been fingering his phone, ends up pushing the button. While Ji-seok is talking to Mi-yeon on the phone, Jeong-ran comes in and Ji-seok abruptly hangs up. Jeong-ran remarks that it would be strange for her to suspect him of having an affair under the current circumstances, but Ji-seok does not answer. When he receives a call from Mi-yeon asking to see him, he hurriedly gets out of the car and starts running.moreless

    Getting into his car next to Jeong-ran, Ji-seok starts to drive away, but stops and runs toward the elevator, leaving Jeong-ran to stare after him in surprise. Ji-seok calls Mi-yeon’s phone and looks around for her, while Mi-yeon sits in her car with the ringing phone in her hand. Lowering his head, Ji-seok is unable to utter a single word. He returns to his car with Jeong-ran, while Mi-yeon gazes after him on the verge of tears. Mi-yeon cries as she sits alone among the audience at the filming of Wal-suk’s comedy program. Meanwhile, Ji-seok waits in vain for a phone call from Mi-yeon, and Deok-gu warily informs him that Mi-yeon is already married. During a memorial rite with her in-laws, Mi-yeon stops in the middle of bowing and becomes lost in thought. Mi-yeon goes to Ji-seok’s office and stares at the name plate on his door. When someone comes out of the room, she hurriedly moves away. Ji-seok visits the bank where Tae-hun works and asks him various questions under the guise of a client seeking consultation. As he is leaving, he stops outside the window of Tae-hun’s office and mouths in his direction, ‘I love your wife.’ Mi-yeon becomes drunk at an office dinner and calls Ji-seok. She asks him just who is dying, and when he replies that he is, she tearfully demands to know who gave him permission to die.moreless

    Hearing Ji-seok ask her to live with him for just three months, Mi-yeon turns his back on him in utter amazement. As she is driving away, she recalls their time together. Back at home, Mi-yeon stands oblivious to the ringing of her cell phone, and Tae-hun is puzzled by her flustered behavior. Ji-seok also sits dazed on his couch. When Jeong-ran puts him on the phone with his daughter, he ends up saying something completely irrelevant. Stroking Mi-yeon’s hair as she lies on the sofa, Tae-hun suggests that she take some time off school, but Mi-yeon says she only has one semester to go and would rather keep at it. Jeong-ran asks Ji-seok if he is seeing another woman, but is met by his stony silence. Ji-seok hears from Deok-gu that someone at the university has seen Mi-yeon. Meanwhile, Mi-yeon tells Wal-suk that her old love has come back and asked her to live with him for three months, adding that she felt grateful for his words. After much hesitation, Ji-seok text messages Mi-yeon to ask if it would be okay to call, but Mi-yeon just turns her phone off upon seeing his message. Heading home at the end of the day, Ji-seok sees Mi-yeon and slowly approaches her. She finally turns around and spots him. Later, Jeong-ran and Ji-seok leave for a social meeting, but on the way there, Ji-seok is suddenly overcome with unbearable pain.moreless

    In the fall of 2006, Ji-seok looks out the window of his office on the university campus at the sound of a car’s horn. Deok-gu, standing next to his brand new vehicle, looks up at Ji-seok in glee. Coming out of the operating room, Byeong-chan glances at the charts of professors who require follow-up examinations and his gaze is suddenly riveted by one of the names. Mi-yeon, on an office trip, procures drinks from another party and is cheered by her coworkers. Jeong-ran, who has returned to Korea, looks around as she comes out of the airport. Finding that Ji-seok is nowhere to be seen, she heads straight to the gallery. Ji-seok, Deok-gu, and Byeong-chan sit down to drink together, but Byeong-chan neglects his glass and keeps looking at his watch. When Byeong-chan departs early, Ji-seok runs after him and asks him what is the matter with him, only to hear him pronounce composedly that Ji-seok has pancreatic cancer. Walking the streets in a state of shock, Ji-seok tries twisting his body and jumping in place. Assailed by sudden pain, he sinks to the ground. After looking up information about pancreatic cancer on the internet, Ji-seok sits in his living room in a daze when Jeong-ran walks in. Tae-hun sneaks up on Mi-yeon, who is returning home after working all night, and embraces her from behind. Surprised, Mi-yeon looks at Tae-hun and smiles. Meanwhile, Ji-seok goes to another hospital for additional tests, and receives the same diagnosis. He sprints down the street but collapses to his knees with pain. He tells Deok-gu, who has run after him, that he wants to see Mi-yeonmoreless

Hearing him say that all she needs to do is say she loves him, Mi-yeon tells him that she does and Ji-seok kisses her on the forehead. Ji-seok proposes that they emigrate to the U.S. and they go to apply for a visa. The day before they are due to depart, Ji-seok is confronted by his father. When Ji-seok refuses to obey him, he throws himself into the path of an oncoming car right before Ji-seok’s eyes...moreless

One day, he takes the bus to school because his bicycle is broken... Their feelings for each other have already begun to grow. Mi-yeon’s grandmother passes away, and Ji-seok is dragged by his father to the very house where Mi-yeon lives. As fate would have it, Ji-seok and Mi-yeon are illegitimate first cousins. Ji-seok’s father decides to move the family to Seoul, and Ji-seok and Mi-yeon are forced to part with no promise of seeing each other again... Four years later, in Seoul. Ji-seok and Mi-yeon’s feelings for each other have not abated with the years, and they are constantly plagued by longing and regret... Chancing upon Mi-yeon on the street, Ji-seok stands behind her and says, “I told you to hide yourself well, didn’t I? I tried so hard not to run into you... Be careful and stay out of my sight.
