Landfills are the nation's second largest source of manmade methane pollution. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and a contributor to the smog air pollution. While landfills such as Puente Hills in Los Angeles are realizing the economic benefits of capturing and utilizing the energy from methane, there are still hundreds of landfills across the nation missing this critical opportunity. Pet overpopulation is the most serious humane issue facing pet animals in our society. Thousands of pets die in Los Angeles every year as a result of overpopulation. Their remains are collected throughout the city (from shelters, veterinarian offices and even from the streets) and then taken to rendering facilities to be processed into raw materials - which will be used in the production of items that include cosmetics, animal and fish feed. Rendering involves crushing animal by-products (eg, fat, bones and internal organs), heating them to drive off the water content and then separating the residue into fat (generally called 'tallow') and solids.moreless

    • Charise: A Portrait of an African American with Albinism
Join us for an intimate look into the life of Charise Johnson, a vibrant young African-American woman with a 10-year-old son and a busy life. When you first see her you can tell right away she's different. Charise has Albinism. And when you get to know her you will discover she really is different and there's nothing wrong with that. In 1974, when Charise was born, a childhood free of major health problems is not what life had in store for her. At the age of nine she was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. By the time Charise became an adult, she'd had several surgeries, a temporary ostomy bag, and ultimately had her large intestines removed entirely; after which she developed Crohn's disease. Arthritis has left her in need of knee replacements and a lifetime of damage to her skin from the sun has lead to re-occurring skin cancers. Charise, being blessed with a mature and supportive family had incredible support throughout her developmental years. They are what kept her grounded when the social pains far outweighed her physical ills. There was no shortage of bullies and teasers in Charise's life. Even as an adult she can't escape the verbal abuse of strangers with statements like "what are you?". In "Charise: A Portrait of an African American with Albinism", Charise shares with us, her pains and her joys. She talks about her family life and what it is like having Albinism from medical, social and personal perspectives. The hats are made in underground caves that create a natural humidity keeping the fibers of the huano palm tree pliable during the weaving process. The only way to find the caves is to arrive in town and ask around as the caves are located in the back yard of peoples homes. In this case a bike taxi driver took us to a friends house.moreless

In the heart of the black community, and among some of the oldest neighborhoods in The City of West Palm Beach, at the intersection of Tamarind Avenue and 25th Street, sits a 1 1/2 acre lot containing the remains of some 674 unidentified men, women, and children; victims of The Great Okeechobee Hurricane. They were migrant farmers and laborers of western Palm Beach County. Mostly black people, they were segregated even in death and were interred without coffins, as wood was reserved for whites only. Florida author Zora Neale Hurston described the mass burial in her 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God: "... Don't let me ketch none uh y'all dumpin' white folks, and don't be wastin' no boxes on colored," a guard in the book says. "They's too hard tuh git ahold of right now." In life, they helped turn a South Florida swamp into a booming tropical mecca. In death, they were pitched into a trench, and left to be ignored for three-quarters of a century, neglected and nearly forgotten. A sewer-treatment plant and slaughter house were built adjacent to the site and a road was paved over a section of the grave. 80 years later, community leaders since have come together and worked to have the site beautified and registered as a National Historic Landmark, insuring the site and the dignity of those who died in Florida's most deadly hurricane is preserved. The September 16, 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane is the second most deadly storm in United States history. In total, the hurricane killed at least 4,078 people and caused around $100 million ($1 billion 2006 US dollars) in damages over the course of its path.moreless

    • Children of Congo: From war to Witches
Over five million people have died during the past decade as a result of the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Few people are aware of the unimaginable scale of human suffering, death, and destruction that has occurred in this vast country deep in the heart of Africa. In the aftermath of this brutal war, children have endured the brunt of the suffering. This 67 minute film documents the plight of thousands of street children living in Kinshasa and confirms the wide-spread accusations of child witchcraft, torture and child prostitution. The film also examines the efforts to reintegrate demobilized child soldiers, displaced refugees, and orphaned children following the eruption of the massive Nyiragongo volcano, near the city of Goma in Eastern Congo. These heroic efforts are finally bringing some measure of hope and stability to the lives of the Congolese people. A shorter version of the film (56 min. 40 sec.) is also available. The documentary Susan for Now takes the viewer on a journey of discovery through what most people know only vaguely as a mysterious and taboo subculture: the world of sadomasochism. The film is a first person account of a woman reclaiming her sexual freedom after a ten-year period of self-imposed celibacy and follows the filmmakers personal quest through the underground world of the sex positive community in Seattle. While Susan for Now is a memorably vivid and unflinching exploration of this widely practiced and yet little known genre of alternative sexuality, the film is equally notable for its revealing insights into the minds and hearts of articulate and sincere individuals from every walk of life, from lawyers, IT professionals, graphic artists, musicians and real estate agents to name a few. The individuals portrayed convey how BDSM is practiced in a consensual and responsible manner. What emerges is an informative depiction of a diverse and growing community and its uneasy relationship with societys shifting mainstream culture. This film dispels the myth that all forms of BDSM and its practitioners are inherently deviant. THE FULL VERSION IS NOW AVAILABLE ON AMAZON.COMmoreless
