Episode Summary

EDIT
Dwayne discovers that Whitley has goaded Kim into letting her assist in the planning of her own surprise birthday party. Dwayne takes Whitley to a cheap dinner and tells her that he scrapped the party. She feels that she deserves a nice birthday after her rough year, while he insists that she should have trusted him to plan the party on his own. Dwayne sends Whitley into the kitchen, then sneaks all of their friends into the living room to surprise her. Charmaine and Terrell struggle badly in French class. They refuse to accept help from prize pupil Gina, and all other tutors dismiss them as a lost cause. Terrified at the prospect of having their perfect grade point averages ruined, they hide a baby monitor in Gina's bag in an attempt to learn the contents of the oral midterm. Charmaine and Terrell get caught and automatically fail the midterm, leaving Charmaine humiliated. She admits that she wouldn't have been so desperate to get a good grade if Gina hadn't taunted her about her struggles. Gina points out that Charmaine treated her the same way in math. They apologize, and Gina offers to help her improve her grade.moreless

  • This episode is extremely well-written, and based on an actual event from the writer's college days. It is by far the best episode of the entire series!

The writer really did a fabulous job of taking his own "surprise birthday party" and translating into this awesome episode. The original surprise party actually happened during college, and the entire guest list, party location, etc. was planned by the guest of honor(the writer of this episode). Of course, in this episode Whitley is out-smarted by Dwayne. In the original party, the guest of honor outsmarted everyone.

This episode is the best of the series, because it has a feeling of truth to it. Who hasn't wanted to plan their own surprise party? And who hasn't wanted to out-smart the perosn who always has to be the center of attention?

    Highly reccomended!moreless

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • In "Pride and Predjustice", Whitley states that her birthstone is emerald. This implies her birthday should be in May which is when she celebrated in "Clair's Last Stand".

    • When Charmaine visited the Hillman campus in Conflict of Interest, she speaks a few very fluent French phrases with Whitley. Yet in this episode, she can barely pronounce any French words.

    • Whitley seems to celebrate her birthday at different times of the year. In this episode, it is very cold outside. However, in "Clair's Last Stand", her birthday is near the end of the semester and it is very warm as she pitifully sings "Happy Birthday" to herself in the Pit courtyard. In "21 Candles", her birthday seems to occur somewhere in between as it's not very hot nor very cold.
