The center where Walter helps kids at risk is close to running out of money. How can they stop this disaster? It'll be hard to do, but Walter has a big heart, and he's not going to give up. So he turns to the power of television. Fund drives work for other good causes, why not this one? Oakes sets up a show which will present the performing arts skills of Hillman students and local residents.

Be careful what you wish for...

The only problem with the students is, well, they show up.

Whitley wants to sing Josephine Baker, but finds her back-up dancers are enveloped in a feud of their own. Dwayne chokes up as his stand-up comedy routine gets underway. A modest number of callers help out, but the center is short of its goals.

How is Walter going to save the day?

This is an amusing story about going all out to help people. The message is not too heavy, and it has its share of smiles.moreless

    • Kiki Shepard is a well-known dancer who once worked as a showgirl on It's Showtime at the Apollo, which Sinbad was hosting when this episode aired. Her work in that capacity garnered her a mention in the rap group Outkast's 2000 hit "So Fresh, So Clean."

    • Dawnn Lewis performs Paula Abdul's "Straight Up," while Charnele Brown sings "Inseparable" by Natalie Cole (a favorite among contestants on It's Showtime at the Apollo's Amateur Night). Alisa Gyse Dickens gives a great rendition of another Natalie Cole song, "Mr. Melody." Whitley butchers Josephine Baker's "J'ai Deux Amours."

    • This episode clearly should have aired in the fall, as it had Dwayne still dating Kinu. Thus, the community center must have eventually raised the necessary funds; it was still going strong in A Word in Edgewise.
