EDIT
When One Door Closes... (2)
AIRED:
Marion and Adele arrive to help Dwayne and Whitley pack for the move to Tokyo. After learning of Whitley's pregnancy, they try to dissuade the couple from leaving. Whitley grows tired of listening to Dwayne argue with the women; she storms out. She finds solace with Ron, who has gotten into a major fight with Freddie over his plans to sue Dwayne. Dwayne convinces Whitley that they need to move on and make a life away from Hillman. Marion and Adele overcome their anxiety about being separated from their grandchild by getting very drunk. Dwayne and Whitley's friends throw them a going-away party at the Pit. Freddie comes over to Ron's apartment to share the news that she made law review. They make up, but she cannot convince him to come to the party. Everyone shares favorite stories about the Waynes and wishes them luck. Whitley and Dwayne return the favor by thanking their friends for all their love and support. Dwayne has very kind words for Ron, who hears about the speech from Freddie. He catches up to Dwayne moments before the couple is to leave for the airport. They apologize, and Dwayne offers to split the game's royalties. Ron suggests that he invest the money in the baby's future instead. Dwayne asks Ron to be the child's godfather. Dwayne and Whitley say goodbye, and Ron tearfully watches them depart.moreless

  • Pt2 of the series finale gave this great cast a wonderful send-off.

How do you say goodbye to a cast of characters that have almost literally become a part of your family; affecting your Thursday night viewing for six years? Start by all conflicts and if possible, let everyone walk off happily ever after. That's what ADW did.

Though it would have been nice to see Jalessa and Walter, or even Maggie and Denise one more time, this one hour episode was only corrupted by the fact that there were a few more episodes to be aired before the finale. Instead of NBC airing them in order, they ran the finale first and the remaining episodes in following weeks. Not very classy.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Early in the party, Mr. Gaines sings the same song which he sang during "Mind Your Own Business", but he says he wrote it for Dwayne and Whitley.

    • In Whitley's farewell speech she notes that she had been associated with Hillman for SIX years. Did she (and the writers) forget about her freshman year which occurred prior to the start of the series?

    • At the farewell party, Kim states that she met Whitley's things before she met Whitley. However, Kim was the first to arrive in the room; this allowed her to claim "Whitley's bed" first.

  • QUOTES (1)

  • NOTES (2)

    • The song the cast sings towards the end of the episode is End Of The Road by Boyz II Men.

    • Episodes 136 and 137 aired as an hour-long series finale on a Saturday night. Given the fact that the two episodes had different writers and directors, the producers probably did not intend for them to be shown together.
