Nitpick: The large, hairy spiders that plague the family's house are said to be tarantulas, and the Chinese servant tells them that they come in pairs because they mate for life. However, no breed of tarantula mates for life; in fact, the male tarantula leaves immediately after mating or risks being attacked by the female. It seems likely that the spiders in question were some kind of wolf spiders, which are large, hairy spiders that are known to mate for life.
