This series leads us through the history of the United Kingdom, from its beginnings as a Celtic territory beset by waves of invaders--the Anglo-Saxons and the chief Contintental power, the Romans--to its defeat under the Norman Conquest, through the suffering of the plague to the rise of its own status as a military powerhouse. British culture is drawn from many sources and this show does a good job of weaving them together. (The title of the series is based loosely on that of a book by the monk the Venerable Bede. It is a classic, centuries later still considered illuminative on the roots of the country.)

The show was produced a number of years ago, and is repeated all too infrequently. While it may be available for home release, here's hoping it will be shown again soon for the general public.moreless
