A Man Called Hawk

Show Summary

A Man Called Hawk is a spin-off of the Robert Urich drama Spenser: For Hire. Hawk, played by Avery Brooks, moves back to his hometown of Washington, D.C. Hawk is tough and streetwise, a man who is erudite with a booming baritone voice who dresses fly while fighting crime -- despite the fact that he lacks the "official" credentials to do so. His mentor and father figure is the "Old Man." Although many critics dismissed Brooks' portrayal in the series as stiff and one-dimensional, Brooks himself described Hawk as "a contemporary, mythological brown hero." Although steeped in mystery, Hawk was clearly very proud of his heritage -- his home was filled with African sculptures and artifacts. We also learn that Hawk is a Vietnam War veteran, a former boxer and is skilled at playing jazz piano. The series premiered in January 1989 as a mid-season replacement. Its ratings suffered and the show was cancelled after just one season.

  • Avery Brooks has a mean swagger as Hawk.

I remember this show back in the day when I was a kid at 9 years old. Avery Brooks was cool as hell and had a swagger that's unmatched. I am looking all the episodes on youtube but no They only have the same episode and clips from Spenser for hire. Avery Brooks made my mom swoon every night she would watch that show. I miss shows like this from the 80'S like. We need more of those like that. If anyone can get these episodes please let me know @moreless
  • Inspirational for it's time and beyond!

I was recently watching episodes of this ill-fated series on TV One and as a high school student or now as an adult the mythos is still inspiring albeit extremely fantastic. This is a series that was/is ahead of its time & I wonder when, even in the wake of the 44th president, will there ever be a place for a fictional African-American hero of this majesty and grandeur of action except in reruns...??? Time will tell as it always does but the viewing public is fickle and a series' success is fueled by the advertising machine. In the meantime however I have 13 episodes of one of the most unappreciated spin-offs, and TV series in general, of all time.moreless
