Rose Harsent was 23 years old when she was murdered. She was killed on May 31st 1902.
The inscription on Rose's gravestone reads: Rose Annie Harsent whose life was cruelly taken.
Fellowes: Her work was hard but the Crisps were not poor and her life was by no means intollerable. She had her own bedroom, she could come and go as she pleased in her free time and with a staircase leading directly from the kitchen to her room, she could do so without thier knowledge.
Fellowes: The mystery endures to this day: who did kill Rose Harsent on that wild and stormy night?
Fellowes: It was in this house, then called Providence House, on a sweltering summer night in 1902 with the greatest strom on record raging that a young woman, Rose Harsent, was savagely murdered.
Fellowes: This is Peasanhall, a remote and charming Suffolk village and, one would have thought, the last place on earth to witness violent death.
Parts of this episode were filmed on location in Peasanhall, Suffolk. The houses in the village are pink because they are painted in pig's blood and white wash.
Julian Fellowes says that if Rose had given birth to her child, it would have gone to the Workhouse. This was due to the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 that made all illegitimate children the sole responsibility of their mothers. Fathers were not legally bound to support a child born outside marriage. However, If mothers were unable to support themselves and their children, they would have to enter the workhouse by law.
