- Julian Fellowes says that if Rose had given birth to her child, it would have gone to the Workhouse. This was due to the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 that made all illegitimate children the sole responsibility of their mothers. Fathers were not legally bound to support a child born outside marriage. However, If mothers were unable to support themselves and their children, they would have to enter the workhouse by law.
