The gang have all gathered at the local ice rink to witness Robbie (Chris Gascoyne) popping the big question to Paula (Liz White). Shocked and thrilled Paula immediately says yes but her excitement is not shared by all. Mel (Kaye Wragg), Gary's (Paul Nicholls) long-term girlfriend is left wondering why despite being together for several years, Gary still hasn't proposed to her. The lads head off for a night on the town and after a few beers Robbie seems to put all thoughts of his recent engagement behind him. Kelvin (Ben Miles), Gary's best-friend and married father of two, is also keen, as usual, to check out the local talent. Shortly afterwards the lads decide to head home with a group of local girls. Gary is stunned when he realises their intentions and is left alone with Christine (Jessica Radcliffe). Gary has never been unfaithful to long-term girlfriend Mel. Despite having no intention to start now, Christine's honesty and frankness catches him off guard and he becomes caught up in the intensity of the moment and is unfaithful to Mel. The day after, Gary is appalled by his behaviour. But after a great deal of soul-searching, concludes that the incident was a wake-up call - a reminder to how much he's been taking Mel for granted. Meanwhile, Gary is unconvinced about Robbie's intentions towards Paula and confronts him. Robbie doesn't take it well but does realise that he doesn't really want to marry Paula. As Valentine's Day draws nearer Gary calls on Kelvin and Paula to help him prepare the perfect night for Mel. However, when the big day finally arrives, a heart to heart with Paula leaves Gary with further food for thought, is Mel really 'the One'? Mel thinks she knows what to expect - she's seen the engagement ring in Gary's pocket. But as the moment approaches, Gary is finally forced to admit that he can't marry her. Gary admits his infidelity and tries to explain that something vital is missing between him and Mel. She's broken-hearted and shocked, but turns angry - Will Gary ever start living in the real world? Or will he carry on waiting for a perfection that doesn't exist? Their relationship is over. Gary is unsure that he's made the right decision until Paula reminds him of a piece he wrote when he was only 15 and he realises he has made the right decision to not compromise: "One day, I'll get old and I'll get ill and I'll die. And if I'm lucky, I'll meet the reason why it's all been worth while. And every time she walks into a room... I'll not be able to breathe. And every time I walk down a street where she's trod but she's not now, the path'll ring wi' her name. Every bit of town that's familiar to me, where I live, where I go, it'll cry out without her. I'll be a dead man surrounded by the living until she's by my side. Because she gives me breath and fills my head with thoughts."moreless
