  • Based on a plot from Wingfield\'s \"A Touch of Frost\" episode, Frost hunts for a serial rapist who is targeting women in their homes.

    9.0
One of the better episodes taken from the \"A Touch of Frost\" novel, Frost reaches boiling point in his hunt for a serial rapist. With W.P.C. Wallace on assignment to C.I.D. to assist him, he goes to the desperate measure of using her as bait, a method which works too well. Mullett and D.C.I. Allen are at his throats throughout the episode which makes for some surprising tension amongst the officers. This is in abundance in the novels, but was rarely transferred onto the screen. Frost, who usually got on well with Allen, is now angrily slamming his door in his face and disobeying orders.

The story does not mirror the plot of the novel much at all, save for the decoy operation Frost performs at the end of the episode. This may make fans who\'ve read the novel first under-appreciate the episode slightly. There are too many changes which were never necessary - and all sorts of sub-plots added-in that do not add to the suspense. Also carried over from the novel is the disappearance of a 17-year-old girl, an apparent abduction, but turns out to be a simple run-away. These were the Dawsons in the novel, but the names have been changed for the episode - in fact, all of them have. Why? But the episode redeems itself with Frost\'s angry humour and several moments of suspense and action. The opening attack on a young woman in her car and the car chase featuring Frost cursing to himself with comic genius as he tries to negotiate a round-a-bout while in pursuit are stand-outs.

As usual, the acting is first-rate and the dialogue has been well written to create a suitable pace. Mullett is upset about the rapes but as usual does nothing to help, except give Frost a few days before he calls in the County Rape Squad. Sergeant Hanlon, D.S. Toolan and Sergeant Wells all boost their scenes considerably. The ending is well-done with Frost bursting in just a second late to save the day, and the subsequent arrest and interview of the rapist quite dramatic. Of course, a twist of humour is added afterwards to soften the mood, as is always done in the show with great tact and subtlety.moreless
