Despite giving up coffee and alcohol and taking up colonic irrigation and Buddhist chanting, Edina is panicking about a fashion show she's organising, Princess Diana has turned down an invite, and the only celebs who can be bothered to attend are Sinitta and Anne Robinson.moreless
  • fantastic way to start a fantastic series!

Edina wakes up with a hangover and a panic attack. She joins her daughter who is having breakfast in the kitchen. Saffy looks at her mother accusingly for having broken her promise that she would stop drinking. Edina is mad that Saffy has accidentally put her royal jelly moisturizer on her toasts instead of honey and tries to guilt her daughter into making her a cup of coffee ("No, not instant darling. Grind some beans, for god's sake. Instant coffee is just old beans that have been cremated; I don't want that"). Edina is late for work and the preparations she's supposed to be making for the big fashion show she's throwing that evening. Before getting dressed she rings her Buddhist guru Chukhani who tells her to wear a green outfit. She claims to a dubious Saffy that the color is related to who she was in a previous existence. Edina wants her daughter to come with her to the fashion show but Saffy dismisses this as another one of her mother's "self-induced crises."

Edina ends up wearing a flashy red and orange designer outfit: "It's a Lacroix." Patsy shows up and leaves with Edina. Saffy sends her mother off saying: "Don't be late Or drunk." On the way to her PR company Edina is depressed that she's been deserted by both her daughter and her son Serge. Patsy wonders what the point of having children is if they don't turn up to one's launches. After an unscheduled detour via Harvey Nichols to do some shopping, they both eventually arrive at Edina's office. Edina throws a fit when she discovers that one of the models, Yasmin Le Bon, has called in sick. The VIP guest list isn't looking too good either: Princess Anne will be in attendance instead of Princess Diana.moreless
  • AMAZING!

    "Perfect"
What can I say about this episode except "bloody amazing?" The pilot presents us two women, Eddy and Patsy, always drunk and always hilarious.

They are convinced that they are the best on the world. Their working day combines drinking, smoking and again, drinking. For a person who loves comedies, this show should be an absolute hit. I look forward to seeing more episodes.

It's yet the beginning, but I almost died laughing while watching this episode. I totally reccomend this to everyone who likes comedy, parody or satire. Because it's one of the best comedies of all time. And it's just the beginning... :)moreless
  • Just the beginning

    "Great"
A good way to introduce people to all the characters and their eccentricities. An awesome first episode for any show.
Patsy doesn't show up until about 10 minutes into the episode so that they can focus time on the Edina/Saffy relationship and that's ok. Once you see the car ride to Harvey Nichols you know that this is totally unlike anything ever on American television.
Sets up every character except for Gran although Patsy is a bit more restained that she is in later episodes, the pregnancy test bit is hilarious as every woman with a frightening encounter with First Response or EPT can tell you. A breath of fresh air with a faint odor of wine. Name dropping galore refreshing and exciting.moreless
  • The beginning of the best comedy ever

In one word: wow! This show manages to get a lot of jokes into the most simple scene like e.g. the kitchen scene. Anyhow, the characters are great, but the thing I liked most is that the actors fitted right in to their character. It was like they\'d been playing their respective characters for a long time while they were just getting started. The whole fashion-show was hilarious with drunken Eddy, and the ending were she fell was amazing too. Anyhow, this episode set an example of how good British comedy can be.moreless

    • Eddie: Why do you have to pick on everything I do? All I want is a few little things, a few little pleasures, a few little crutches to help me get through life, darling. Saffy: Get through? Mum, you've absolved yourself of responsibility. You live from self-induced crisis to self-induced crisis. Someone does your hair, someone chooses what you wear, someone does your brain, someone tells you what to eat, and three times a week someone sticks a hose up your bum and flushes it all out of you. Eddie: Oh... It's called colonic irrigation, darling. It's not to be sniffed at.

    • Patsy: Japanese is the thing, darling - everything with a pulse is dinner.

    • Eddie: Look at Mummy, darling. Do I need surgery? Saffy: Yes... get your mouth sewn up.

    • Edina: Get on to Princess Anne's people and tell them that everyone there will be mentally ill. Tell her we'll sponsor her to wear a designer dress and make sure she realises that if she doesn't, those little children won't get anything... Press release: "Free Champagne Reception". Call Moet and Chandon and tell them it's for charity, call Joan Collins and tell her there'll be free champagne!

    • Edina: Anybody can go to the bloody toilet darling! Saffy: Well they obviously haven't seen you drunk.

    • Saffy: Well why is today such a panic anyway? It's only a fashion show and you've had six months to prepare it. I mean why is everything always so hysterical? I mean, all you've got to do is play a bit of music, turn on the lights, get some people who've thrown up everything they've ever eaten and send them down a catwalk.

    ADD NOTES
    • The opening theme is "This Wheel's On Fire" by Julie Driscoll & Adrian Edmondson. Various artists come to sing this theme during the course of the series.

    • This was the pilot episode that would secure Absolutely Fabulous another 5 episodes. The series would stay at 6 episodes for 3 more seasons.

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    ADD ALLUSIONS
    • Edina: You've probably got something rather interesting to listen to on Radio 4. The British radio system is divided up much the way the BBC television system is, all designated by numbers. Radio 4 is targeted toward a more educational and business oriented radio.
