Actress Lumley is routinely funnier, but actress/writer Saunders put those words in her mouth to begin with.

While Saunders probaly wrote Edina as the funnier one, Joanna with her quirky ways turned Patsy into the funnier one. I've always thought that while Lumley is the better actress (particularly in this role), Saunders is the better comidienne.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Patsy's my favourite but in terms of the actresses I revere Saunders more, because she was the one who created such a great character to begin with.

    Patsy is the funniest character

The Character of Edina is based on an actual woman who livesin London of the same name

I think Patsy's character is more pathetic and as a result is funnier. I think Patsy is more pathetic due to her financial situation - Eddie technically has more assets although it was hilarious when we found out the house actually belongs to Saffie. Half of the story lines were about Patsy sponging off Eddie. They both play brilliant drunks but Patsy seems to do it better. As a writer, I don't think Jennifer Saunders would care who is seen as the funniest. The same goes for Dawn French in the Vicar of Dibley. Dawn's character wasn't the funniest in that either.

It's a tough call but Edina would always make me laugh more so than Patsy.

I have always loved Patsy for some reason. Her kind of humour hits me better than Edina's. It IS a close call anyways.
