While the first few seasons of A12 can be a mixed bag, this one sets the table for the series quite well. We're introduce to the main characters in a way that gives enough back-story to "get" what's happening and care about them, but leaves plenty to discover. While the tragic loss of his last partner is an aspect of the Malloy character they don't do as much with as they might, it does explain his fierce desire to treat training his young partner as more than just another job, but as a life and death thing, especially as he comes (quickly) to care very much about the young cop. In Reed we see the potential to be a very good officer, but also how much he has to learn.
