Reed naively thinks the system can help a young serial car thief who continually skirts responsibility for his actions with the help of his rich father's lawyer. In the meantime, he and Malloy help a woman track down the drug dealer responsible for her boyfriend's fatal overdose, and pull over a stubborn elderly woman in a vintage car.

Malloy and Reed are stunned to discover that the driver who led them on a high speed chase is the son of Sgt. MacDonald, and Malloy takes it upon himself to help his boss figure out why the young man is acting out. In the meantime, they investigate a possible burglary in progress at an apartment building, mediate a dispute at a park over an elderly woman feeding ducks, respond to a call of two armed men fighting over a woman, and deal with a wino who is attempting to direct traffic at a busy intersection.

Malloy and Reed return a young runaway to his home while responding to a domestic disturbance call at the same address, and discover a dysfunctional situation that appears to be escalating toward a tragic conclusion. In the meantime, they search for a female drug pusher who mistakes a stranger for a fellow pusher, investigate a man attempting to force his way into a truck, and encounter a wino riding a stolen bike at night.

Malloy wins $10,000 in a contest to name a new woman's shampoo, resulting in a lot of unwanted advice on how to use the money. On patrol, he and Reed deal with a loud music complaint that has a romantic sub-context, encounter a sniper perched atop a parking garage, respond to a burglary at a foreclosed house, and investigate the murder of a wino.

Reed thinks he can haggle another $12.50 off a used car, but Malloy warns him that he's pushing his luck. On patrol, they test a suspected drunk driver who hit a light pole, investigate a home invasion that results in a man fatally shooting his ex-son-in-law, search for a car stripper in a parking garage, pull over a suspicious speeder who lacks identification, and pursue a suspect who just committedtwo armed robberies.

Malloy and Reed have a difficult night ahead of them when they get stuck with an old patrol car that it is riddled with problems. On patrol, they deal with a female car thief, chase down a prowler with a sympathetic story, pull over a motorist who points out an ironic detail, investigate suspicious activity at a warehouse, and pursue an armed robbery suspect.

Reed starts a flu epidemic that decimates the city's police force, forcing him and Malloy to work a double shift. During Day Watch, he and Malloy encounter a bookmaker being held at gunpoint, mediate a dispute over a cantaloupe, investigate a possible robbery in progress at a closed department store, engage in a foot chase with an athletic young man, and pull over a motorist who turns out to be a VIP.

Malloy's headstrong and elderly apartment manager stages a protest at the station after she's victimized by a serial purse snatcher, and Malloy suggests a stakeout will be their only chance to apprehend the elusive suspect. On patrol, he and Reed chase a suspicious vehicle into a lumber yard, and investigate the murder of a young man at his parents' home.

It's Malloy's birthday, but he's consumed with anger over the thought his colleagues might have a plan to throw him a surprise party. On a busy patrol, he and Reed make an ironic traffic stop while responding to a burglary call at an antique store, deal with an extremely embarrassed theft victim at a lingerie store, investigate suspicious activity at a service station, use a creative approach to apprehend a serial jewelry store burglar, and engage in a shootout inside the police station's parking garage.

After completing a hazardous driving refresher course, Sgt. MacDonald assigns Malloy and Reed to a nighttime undercover bicycle patrol to test Officer Wells' idea on how to deal with a rash of residential car break-ins. The next day, they pull over a hippie with an obnoxious passenger, then put their refreshed driving skills to the test when called to a burglary in progress at a new car showroom.

Malloy and Reed transport an unconscious 8-year-old boy to Rampart General Hospital and help him and his parents cope with the ordeal. Afterwards, they assist a child welfare hotline operator locate a 15-year-old girl who has intentionally overdosed on pills, then race to find the boy they brought in earlier after he escapes from the hospital.

Malloy finds himself attracted to the new girl in the steno pool, and decides to ask her on a date after learning she's Officer Wells' 25-year-old niece. Out on patrol, he and Reed investigate a report of a prowler in a heavily wooded neighborhood, make a deal with a flower vendor before booking him for unpaid tickets, engage in a high speed pursuit with a green Corvette, and investigate a suspicious gardener.
