  • More believable characters, better stories continue

    7.5
As is the case through much of S04, the series' improvement is seen in this excellent episode. Larry Ciprio is a kid caught up in drugs in his past trying to work through it, and between the concern of friends (including Pete) his PO and his family, we get a real person we care about rather than just the typical Hollywood junkie. A more believable story, nearly with a tragic end.

Trini Lopez, the great singer-songwriter, is impressive as Larry's Parole Officer, nice to see real Hispanics being given the chance to play roles in the program, not as pathetic stereotypes in sombreros (as in certain early episodes) but as real cops who happen to be named Hernandez instead of Smith or Jones.

Love the comment "Even Jerry West has a bad night", the show's ability to set place and time was always part of what makes A12 such fun, and as a fan of the 70s Lakers, keeping it real like that was cool.

This one won't make any top five lists of A12 eps, but it's just another strong show in a season that really stretched the program's legs and was part of a period of time at which the series went from good to great. Milner's work throughout is very strong, up front when it's appropriate but playing the guy in the background when the time's right, too. James Neilson's direction is noteworthy.moreless
