  • I got bored, to be quite honest.

    I agree 100% with uberito.

This episode seemed like a bad filler and had me bashing my head against a table almost the entire time. The only thing that saved this episode from being a complete waste was the revealing of Ice King's backstory of Simon Petrikov. I wish that Holly Jolly Secrets focused much more on Simon that it did on pointless scenes and throwaway jokes.
  • With incredibly Slow Pacing, This Episode is either a love or hate kind of episode

    5.5
A show like "Adventure Time," you expect the awkward pauses and fast paced action sequences, but this Christmas special episode seems to drag on for a good twenty two minutes too long. The plot never really gets going, and it actually seems quite boring. I don't mind slow plots, but this episode just seemed to be something they were forced to do. "Make a Christmas special," yet they had no good ideas for one in a world that does not know Christmas, or much of the past.

So with the writers not really getting in the groove with this episode, it really brings out weird pacing, and a strangely poor episode for the series. Character development for the Ice King was fairly deep as we got more glimpses of a pre-apocolyptic world, and the Ice King before he had his powers consume him. We learn a rather dark, disturbing tale about his past and his wife. They try to mask it with some humor, but overall, this episode lacked humor, which is fine, but this episode lacked it in a way that it became weird and dark.

As Finn and Jake continued watching Ice King's home movies, the viewer just became "bored" staring at what they were staring. It was a really strange episode, and not what I would expect from a fairly creative bunch of writers. Sure every series has a dog episode, but this was a shock. It was weird because they did long sequences of us watching fast forward, and rewind, and other "lazy" animation practices to fill time. I do not think this episode should have been 22 minutes long. Not enough content for what they tried to extend into that time slot.

In short, the writers didn't seem to grasp what they wanted to accomplish, and the episode had weird pacing. Other things can be sprinkled on top, but to everyone their own. Merry Christmas.moreless

Finn and Jake discover a suitcase in a treasure hunt and find several videotapes in them, which they soon watch at their house. Seeing details of the Ice King's personal life, Finn and Jake keep viewing the tapes to discover his evil secret. I thought this was a great special of Adventure Time. The plot for it was interesting and it was great to see an Ice King episode again (the last Ice King centered episode was Wizard Battle, I'm guessing). My score is an 8 because it alternate rushed and somewhat went slow. The beginning and the diaries went a little fast. Also, the part where Beemo fast forward was kinda taking long. And, last this episode didn't had a mention of Christmas (yet I wanted to review this because it was a holiday special) but at least snow was shown in Ooo. The parts that made me laughed were most of Ice King's diaries, Beemo wanting to be near Finn and Jake, Jake going "AAH!" when he was actually breathing, Ice King as human, and the last part when that worm mentioned all the Adventure Time characters. Overall a great AT special despite that didn't focus on Christmas (although it might take place around Christmas). 8/10moreless
