  • A visiting hunter is looking to bag some whitetail deer. A local mute boy with a love of wildlife foils the hunter by scaring the deer with his slingshot causing them to bolt before they can be shot. In an ironic twist the boy is nearly shot himself.moreless

"The Boy Who Loved Animals" is a prime example of exactly what the classic Canadian series "Adventures in Rainbow Country" is all about. Completely inoffensive, the episode ends without violence or bloodshed with both the mute boy and the hunter, in typical Canadian fashion, finding a common ground and respect for each other's points of view. The hunter forgoes hunting in "Rainbow Country" but won't go as far as giving up hunting entirely. His conversation with Billy Williams at the end of the episode serves to let the viewer know how a responsible hunter conducts himself. The conversation will seem a little heavy-handed and come across as too preachy for many contemporary viewer's tastes. One must, however, remember this show is going on 40 years old. While by today's standards this preaching may seem a little too obvious for our "sophisticated" tastes it is, in a odd retro kind of way, refreshing. On the whole "The Boy Who Loved Animals" is a perfectly representational example of the quintessential Canadian series "The Adventures in Rainbow Country."moreless
