In watching this series once again on DVD, I'm reminded at just how brilliant this first season was. Each episode was a little mini-movie shot in film noir. This was a television series for adults who liked heroic adventure. The Superman during the Whitney Ellsworth years, and more specifically those final seasons in color, were for kids 5-10. Superman, as well as the whole comic book industry, was under investigation for exploiting violence which is why Superman season one producer Robert Maxwell was replaced.

This episode showed a very serious no-nonsense Clark Kent and a stoic Superman and that kudos goes directly to George Reeves for doing, in my estimation, the only valid portrayal of Clark Kent that could be done. How can you be a bumbling, naive clod and still be an ace reporter at the numbere one newspaper in the number one city? the answer is you can't and Reeves knew that. Kent was a tough, smart reporter who only relied on Superman when the situation became desperate. But it was always Kent who solved the crime. He was the truthsayer of the show.
