Ed Clemons is now an insurance salesman in Sumpter, Texas. He was once the town quarterback for this football obsessed community. The Sumpter Mustangs are in a slump and need something to bring life back to the team. Ed Clemons is hired as coach, with one year to turn the team around.

Thankfully Ed's wife, Maggie, steps in to take over the insurance company and support Ed in his coaching attempt. Ed quickly causes dissension in the ranks by putting his son, Joe Willie, in the coveted quarterback position. Bobby Taylor had been the quarterback and the switch causes a division in loyalties among the team.moreless
