Tuppence is curious about a cryptic message in a newspaper's personal column, suggesting a romantic rendezvous. Testing her theory, she talks Tommy into attending the Three Arts Ball, and later they visit the cafe which seems to be the meeting point. They hear a cry from another room, and Tuppence finds Lady Merivale there, dying. Her final words are "Bingo did it". Captain Bingo Hale, Lady Merivale's lover, is arrested - but then the Beresfords turn from witnesses against him to trying to prove his innocence.moreless
