One of the themes of The Affair at the Victory Ball is cocaine abuse by the English upper classes. Compare this with the Lord Peter Wimsey episode Murder Must Advertise, which is based on a book by Agatha Christie's friend Dorothy L. Sayers and deals with the same theme at a similar period.
This episode is based on Agatha Christie's short story The Affair at the Victory Ball, which is believed to be the first Poirot short story she wrote. It first appeared in The Sketch magazine in March, 1923, and was later included in a collection called The Under Dog and Other Stories (1926).
