AIRED:
How did five airline disasters contribute to the changes made in air traffic control systems over the years? Disasters profiled include: Grand Canyon mid-air collision in 1956, before radar was standard, Aeromexico 498 in 1986 ('Out of Sight'), Avianca 052 in 1990 ('Missing Over New York'), Gol flight 1907 in 2006 ('Phantom Strike'), and Bashkirian Airlines 2937 and DHL 611 mid-air collision ('Deadly Crossroads'). A new digital air traffic control system called NextGen is also profiled. This would involve moving from a ground based radar system to using GPS, giving pilots more control and relieving air traffic controllers of some of their duties. Flights could also be more direct instead of sticking to established air corridors.moreless

  • First episode that scared me.

This was the first episode ever that actually scared me. Most of the other episodes deal with air disasters that occured far enough in the past that changes have been made since then. These changes have made air travel safer than it was at the time of the disaster. This episode wasn't like that. At the beginning, the Grand Canyon mid-air collision of 1956 was profiled. Because of that collision, radar became standard across the United States. Then the show goes on to tell us that the skies are getting so crowded that radar isn't going to be enough anymore and air traffic controllers are getting overwhelmed. Air travel today is now as dangerous as it was in the 1950's. Yikes!moreless
