Alcatraz is the new show from LOST and Fringe mastermind J.J. Abrams. The mystery-thriller stars Sarah Jones as detective Rebecca Madsen who is investigating a case connected to a prison inmate who died 30 years ago. Her investigation and connection to the prison leads her to work with an unlikely ally: Comic book lover Dr. Diego 'Doc' Soto (played by Lost's Jorge Garcia), while a government agent named Emerson Hause (Sam Neil) tries to intervene and stop her investigation. As Madsen and Soto team up, the mystery of Alcatraz is revealed: inmates that were thought to be dead for years are roaming the streets of San Francisco, continuing their crimes from fifty years ago. As they look into the history of Alcatraz and government cover-ups, they discover that this one prisoner is just a small part of a bigger threat connected with the prison in Alcatraz.

One the most brillant shows to come to Network TV. A shame it was on a pathetic network as Fox Sux. They woudn't know quality if it jumped up and bit them on their diapers! The cast and crew are marvelous. Quality all the way. The feeling of being "gutted" over its cancellation is universaaly felt. If only some other avenue would pick it up to contine this exciting journey.... fox broadcasting you sux!!!moreless
  • What do you except from Fox - The show should be on SCIFI

I actually enjoyed this show, I watched Criminal Minds since the beginning, and once this show came on, I have said it was better then Criminal Minds. I loved the criminals, they were unique and dangerous. I think they should give the rights and show to Sci-fi. In my opinion, I think the Scifi watchers would enjoy this show, and the rating would be up. People who watch primetime tv don't want a mystery. They want the same boring thing over and over. I couldn't believe all the shows that got cancelled. I am thinking that the shows they cancel need to go on another tv network. Look at Family Guy they cancelled it at Season 4 and put it on Cartoon Network, and then Fox made more episodes. We should do that more often.moreless

I am so sorry this show has ended but if there is ever a tv series that could be turned into a movie even if tv special this would be it, I would love to see a two hour special showing everything about this show.

  • Finish what you started: Alcatraz, canned and the list continues

Honestly, I just do not get what goes on in the minds of TV executives. The obstacles to get a pilot made then to have it pass into ordering a first season being what they are, why can the shows that are well done and with major financial backing. TV executives should know, if no one else does, that first seasons are seldom smashing hits on their first seasons. Many of the legendary TV shows have had lukewarm first seasons before coming into its own and surging in popularity and major ratings. We each have our TV shows examples in mind.
If the shows like Alcatraz, Terranova in the present and Caprica and V in the recent past were shoddy, badly scripted, or any of the mediocre reasons why shows should be canned, then many of us out there would be nonplussed and probably agree that a mistake was made in giving them a shot. But here we have shows that are canned on the sole proviso that they were too expensive for the ratings they got. So the message is for producers out there: do not make the effort of putting your money in well drafted pilot projects because you will lose your investment. Stay on the safe side of formula-oriented shows and leave the good stuff for the cable networks. So Fox renews Fringe, mostly because the leading actress is Rupert Murdoch's goddaughter and well made, but cans Alcatraz because though it is of equal value in investment and quality because they don't have someone related to the Juju Man. If you disagree, as is well within your right, then please explain to me that decision because I, for one, would love to have an answer that rationally explains that choice. What comforts me with this idea is that Fringe has been renewed for a shortened final season, which to me means: we're willing to put up money in it but not that much.
I believe that those of us who still want well drafted quality TV shows with good financial backing to exist must find a way to have our stand known beyond the poor ratings that first season might well get. I prefer to give second chances to those shows rather than have to invest my thoughts and emotions on new pilots and new shows, many of the well deserved ones being probably canned once again for the same lame reasons.

I have been watching this on a weekly basis on Watch, but I just read on this site that this show has been axed. This is yet another show that has not been given the chance to grow, it had plenty of interesting ideas and I had hoped would fill the forth-coming void that would be left when, my favorite show, Fringe ends with its 5th season. This now looks like it won't happen, I am very sad. US networks suck!!!!moreless
