Season 2 Episode 9

Night Train

Aired Monday 8:00 PM Nov 16, 1987 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Alf said that he went out with Rhonda once. However, in Help Me Rhonda, he said that he never had the courage to ask her out.

    • Willie started hopping freight trains when he was 17, and his nickname was "Boxcar" Willie.

  • Quotes

    • Willie: Why would you say something like that?
      ALF: Because I'm an instigator!

    • (ALF is telling Kate about his type of personality and his adventurous tendencies.)
Kate: This from the one who watched the movie Aliens from under the couch?
ALF: I thought I owed one of those guys money.

    • (Willie asks ALF what possessed him to jump onto the train.)
      ALF: Is "impetuosity" a word?
      Willie: Yes, it is.
ALF: Then I did it because I'm impetuosity.

    • ALF: I'd just started going out with Rhonda when my planet blew up. Unlucky in love, unlucky in Armageddon.

    • Willie: That's not a seeing eye dog. That's a Doberman pinscher.
ALF: Yikes! Don't let him pinch me.

    • (Train horn sounds.)
      ALF: Woah! What's that?
      Willie: That's the train.
ALF: Wow! Makes the one you have at home look like a toy.

    • Willie: I've lived on the edge.
Lynn: That's right. When I was born, Mom and Dad lived on the edge of Bakersfield.

    • ALF: Hey, Kate, guess what I am?
Kate: Does it start with couch and end with potato?

    • ALF singing: Good Morning America, how are you? Don't you know me, I'm your native son. (pauses)
      What's the next line?
      Willie: Just be quiet!
ALF: Really? I'm surprised that song was such a big hit. (continues singing) Just be quiet, just be quiet, just be quiet, lala la lala lala...

  • Notes

  • Allusions

    • At one point, ALF asks Willie who he thinks will be on Letterman that night, and then responds to his own question, "Probably just Teri Garr."

Teri Garr is an actress who was a recurring guest on Letterman. She was known for her frequent roles on variety shows, and got her start playing dancers in several Elvis Presley movies.

    • After Willie mentions that it was for the best that he and Linda Evans broke up because it allowed him to find his true love, ALF asks if it was Joan Collins. Linda Evans and Joan Collins played rivals in the 1980's show Dynasty.

    • Kate mentions ALF hid under the couch while watching Aliens, which was the 1986 sequel to the movie Alien.

    • The title alludes to an Oscar Peterson song with the same name.
