  • Is Warren writing a new novel - or using his literary methods to plot a murder?

A very conventional story along the lines of "Double Indemnity" or "Body Heat", although abstracted from a British novel (transplanted to San Francisco). James Mason plays a mystery writer - a recluse - who sends several tapes to his publisher, apparently outlining the plot of a new novel. But it sounds all too realistic - is it really his own story, and does he really intend to kill his mistress's husband? The publisher can't decide, of course. There are few surprises, but the direction is very efficient and the acting is fine - Angie Dickinson is a real femme fatale, whilst Mason manages to invest his conveniently all-encroaching insanity with some real angst. It's all wrapped up far too easily, of course, but it's quite enjoyable.
