  • Great Acting, Great Concept

A brilliant performance by Barbara Barrie anchors this great episode based on a John Wyndham story. When a young woman wakes to find herself trapped in an obese body, tended by midgets, she soon realizes a nightmare of some kind is coming true. Addressed now as "Mother", the woman is told she exists only to breed female babies. There are no men in this futuristic world, now ruled by women in every capacity. Insisting she does not belong there, the young woman is threatened with permanent drug-induced sedation to keep her quiet. After an engrossing meeting with the old lady of the society, wonderfully played by Gladys Cooper, the young woman finds herself back in the present world and some intense irony ensues. Although the material is more typical of THE TWILIGHT ZONE, this is one of the great Hitchcock Hour episodes, absolutely essential.moreless
