Note that the title says "get rid of", not "murder"; such violence would be beyond the kindly-seeming Mr. Swinney, who only wishes to lead his own life in the way he wants and not to be at the constant beck and call of his appalling wife. He manages to convince her that he intends homicide, but then does nothing to follow up on this - instead, he contrives to make it seem as if she's about to kill him instead, and her behaviour becomes distinctly unhinged as a consequence. The quietness of Bob Newhart's performance and his perpetually unassuming manner work very well, although the British setting of Robert Gould's original version, with its air of polite fiendishness amidst all the middle-class niceness, was more appropriate.
