  • What's the ghastly secret of the chef's signature dish?

    4.0
I was dumbfounded by the badness of this episode, which might as well have had a new title, for almost nothing remains of the beautifully subtle, cleverly written Stanley Ellin story on which it's nominally based. There's still the shock-horror revelation that the restaurant serves up cooked human flesh, but by the 1980s, after we'd seen "Soylent Green" at the movies or "Sweeney Todd" on Broadway, this was predictable. The secret of Ellin's story - also the earlier TV adaptation - lay in the delicacy with which the unspeakable was approached. This version's about as subtle as a freeway pile-up, and not one character from the story remains. John Saxon, a good actor, struggles hard to demonstrate his professionalism.moreless
