Roald Dahl's perfectly-titled story about a compulsive gambler on a cruise ship touring Europe gives Hitchcock the opportunity for a simple exercise in storytelling, and in fatalism. Botibol's hare-brained scheme for slowing down the ship's progress, so that he will win his bet and make a lot of money to please his culture-vulture wife, fails less because of a lack of common sense than because of a lack of common courtesy - he elects to be condescending, rather than friendly, towards the rather strange lady he keeps meeting on deck. Selecting her, without her knowing it, to be his "witness", he wholly ignores her as a human being - an impoliteness for which he pays dearly.
