  • An ordinary man finds his entire life collapsing around him in the space of just a few hours.

This is a very typical Cornell Woolrich story, with unmerited misery taking its hero on a downright spiral which can only end in horrible death. It takes very little to turn the hard life of an ordinary, underpaid man into a living hell, and at the end he learns that there was no good reason for all his suffering after all. Woolrich was a very unhappy fellow who rarely went out and had the most misanthropic view of his fellow humans - he always felt that evil fate was conspiring against us all, as this story shows. Joanne Woodward, a year away from movie fame, has a surprisingly small role, but plays it well.
