  • Miss Fox is rich, Eddie McMahon is poor; when she refuses to lend him $50, it eventually ruins both their lives.

Bette Davis dominates this episode - surprised? - as a rich and horrible woman whose nastiness is made all the worse because she sincerely believes herself to be a charmer whom everyone likes. Her elaborate scenes with her pampered little dog - whom she treats far better than any human - create an indelible impression of patronising arrogance, and her disdain for the poor elevator-man and his desperate need for some money is despicable. But she learns the hard way not to be quite so dismissive of people, though she has only moments to absorb the moral lesson before death overcomes her. This is a predictable but effective episode, with good acting from everyone; the director is Davis's old Warners co-star, Paul Henreid.moreless
