  • Jack Lyons isn't cut out to be a murderer, and the money-loving Phyllis isn't too appreciative of his efforts.

A rather routine story, chiefly of interest because of its Hollywood notions of middle-class English life in the 1950s, and because of its interesting cast. Denholm Elliott had left Britain because British films mostly confined him to playing ill-fated wimps (in "The Sound Barrier", for instance). He wasn't quite handsome enough, and he was a bit too complicated for conventional heroism. Hazel Court had similarly been wasted as girlfriends in minor comedies. Elliott had a far better playing seedy bounders who'd taken a wrong turn in life (as he does here), whilst Court progressed from this role, as a cheerfully unconcerned accessory to murder, to become an ideally ambiguous heroine in horror movies.moreless
