  • A dangerous lunatic has escaped from a mental home. But is it a man or a woman?

The exposition in the opening scenes is bald in the extreme, but the great skill of director John Brahm counts for an awful lot in this effective episode. One does tend to guess that the obvious wacko Madeleine can't possibly be the killer maniac who's fled the asylum, and the tragic ending seems unnecessarily sadistic; still, one keeps watching because it's all so cleverly staged,so unobtrusively atmospheric. Beatrice Straight holds the screen throughout as the smart, lonely widow who's menaced. It's a pity, though, that scriptwriter Robert Bloch, of "Psycho" fame, couldn't come up with another twist at the end.moreless
