  • Who is the Ripper-style strangler who haunts the fogbound streets of Victorian London?

A very famous story, and one rather more chilling on the page than it proves to be on the screen, one must regretfully say. Though the casting of some old-timer Hollywood Brits is nostalgic, this segment is more like a Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce B-movie than a Hitchcock episode. The biggest surprise is hearing a (pretty good) Scottish accent emerging from the throat of Theodore Bikel, an Israeli-born actor who more often played Russians or middle-European types in Hollywood films. (He had lived in England for some years before finding American success.) The surprise twist is rather peculiarly fudged, and there's a general uncertainty of tone which blunts the force of the storyline.
