  • The Lord works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform - as a priest discovers when he badly needs $1500 for the repair of his church's leaking roof.

This charming tale is one of the mildest of the Hitchcock-directed episodes of this long-running series, but devotees of Hitchcock's work will immediately see several characteristic themes present in its exposition. Claude Rains, reunited with Hitchcock for the first time since "Notorious", is just right as the kind priest who can't make one of his flock (gravel-voiced Ed Gardner) see that praying for success at the race-track isn't the reason why he's been having so many winners, and who is eventually drawn into placing a large bet on a surefire proposition. Hitchcock's Catholic admirers will note the typical way in which he handles themes of guilt and redemption, always with a quiet smile at man's follies.moreless
