I bought the first batch of DVDs that were released last year. First of all I must say they were cheap, 6 euros a piece (3 episodes). But the quality was disappointing. Maybe the master reels were still in Japan somewhere gathering dust, but the image looked like it had been transferred from film to VHS and copied a couple of times before letting it sit on a shelf for a decade. The film grain I can get over, the lack of saturation I can live with, but analogue dropouts in the image - the kind you get on an old disintegrating VHS tape - that's just amateuristic.
There, I feel better already. Still love this series, though. And I don't even regret buying the DVDs. For posterity, you know.
