Niki is concerned about a mole growing on her shoulder, mainly because it won't look good in sleeveless tops, so the other girls encourage her to go see a dermatologist about it. She does this and comes back with some unexpected news: the doctor took a biopsy to determine whether or not she has a case of skin cancer.
During the five days it takes for the biopsy results to come back, the other girls are all worried and very solicitous of Niki. At first Niki downplays any danger, then she gets irritated at her friends' constant efforts to do something for her. Mrs. Merrick tries to get her daughter to open up about what she's going through but Niki won't say much because she thinks that, judging from the past, her mom won't be able to handle such a major problem. But Sierra finally calls Mrs. Merrick up and asks for her help after Niki has pushed her friends away. At the Loft, Juliana Merrick meets her daughter and talks to her. Niki confesses her fears and say she's tired of being strong. She also say she feared her mother couldn't handle bad news. Mom tells Niki she'll help her through the crisis no matter what, if she will allow it.
Castelli can't take waiting for news about the biopsy results and goes to the hospital despite Niki's asking the girls not to come. When she gets there she says a prayer in the chapel that Niki walks in on and overhears. The two girls talk about the effect this experience has had on their faith. Niki says a prayer herself before departing. Maybe, she says, the closeness and understanding this ordeal has brought her with her mother and friends is a good thing. Back home, Alecia, Sierra, Steven and Sean wait anxiously until Niki arrives with the good news that her mole wasn't cancerous.moreless

    • Niki: It keeps droning in my head like some endless remix of a Ricky Martin song. Singer Ricky Martin was skyrocketing in popularity at the time. A former lead singer of the vocal group Menudo, his Latin dance-pop records of the time were the type that were likely to remixed into long dance versions for play in nightclubs and such.

    • Niki: All I need is a spicy tuna roll and some veggie tempura. Items likely to be found in a sushi, bar, though the tempura in this case would be vegetables dipped in batter and deep friend instead of seafood.

    • Alecia: Too bad. You could have been Moldy Spice. Another Spice Girls reference. All of the women in the group took a nickname with "Spice" in it, including Scary Spice, Sporty Spice, Posh Spice, Baby Spice and Ginger (originally Sexy) Spice.

    • Cris: ...she walked up to me and said my Garanimals were so over. Garanimals is a clothing line for children with mix-and-match combinations that are indicated by tags on the clothing featuring cartoon animals.

    • Cris: Who needs Yahoo when you got Sierra. Yahoo was at the time probably the best-known of the internet search engines and they provide other internet services also.

    • Niki: ...our Not Martha Stewart cooking club. Martha Stewart is America's leading how-to guru for homemaking, cooking, gardening, arts & crafts, etc. Some say, though, that she promotes a relentless standard of perfectionism, which is probably why the girls formed a "Not Martha Stewart" club.

    • Niki: The thing appeared mysteriously. I figure it'll disappear mysteriously, much like the Spice Girls. For anyone with a short memory, the Spice Girls were five young, sexy British girls who were recruited to form a dance-pop band with a (supposedly) new-feminist outlook. Their first record releases, helped along tremendously by videos and tons of publicity, were world-wide smashes and they were the hottest act in show business for a while. But they always had their detractors who derided the group as manufactured and questioned their musical talent. By 2000, though they were still together in a slightly altered form, the Spice Girl boom was pretty much over.
