Episode Summary

EDIT
James Herriot, a newly qualified vet, arrives at Skeldale House, Darrowby in Yorkshire for a job interview with Siegfried Farnon, a veterinary surgeon who is building a practice in the village. After accompanying Farnon on his rounds, where he meets the notorious Mr Biggins for the very first time, he is hired as a veterinary assistant, and accompanied by Farnon he meets some of the locals at the Darrowby pub. The next day his very first 'official' patient is a tortoise owned by a very quiet and very small girl. At evening surgery, however, things become more serious when he treats a bull with heat-stroke, and is then called out to examine Lord Halton's favourite hunter, an extremely valuable horse who has a twisted bowel, and who James humanely destroys.moreless

  • I watched this series as a child but I've never seen the very first episode until now. It was simply wonderful! All in all a wonderful starting point to a very enjoyable series. If you haven't watched this episode yet, DO IT NOW!!moreless

    9.5
The first time you can follow James Harriet's life in Yorkshire is wonderfully filmed and well presented. James' character shows really what is in him even in the first episode. Some of the main characters (Mrs Holden & Siegfried and also Biggins!!) are introduced, some like Helen (his later wife) have a bit like a cameo appearence.

James struggles to be a vet in a time when hardly any new vets had a proper job and therefore he travels from Glasgow to Yorkshire. He was offered the job by Siegfried but on arrival James noticed that it's not Siegfried's strong point to keep appointments and therefore he has to wait.

While he waits he meets the infamous Mr. Biggins - great character!! - who never really knows whether he should call the vet or not. James also learns quickly that the farmers don't part well with their money.

All in all a wonderful starting point to a very enjoyable series. If you haven't watched this episode yet, DO IT NOW!!moreless

    • not really a goof just a nitpic I'm a big fan of the books this series was based upon and the bull with heatstroke did not happen his first day on the job in fact he didn't go on rounds by himself for nearly a week after being hired.

The bull happened much later in his career after he'd been in Darroby for several weeks maybe months!
