Boy the way Glen Miller played
Songs that made the hit parade.
Guys like us we had it made,
    Those were the days.
And you knew who you were then,
Girls were girls and men were men,
Mister we could use a man
    Like Herbert Hoover again.
    Didn't need no welfare state,
    Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee our old LaSalle ran great.
    Those were the days.

When I was a kid my parents watched this show religiously. I remember trying to memorize the theme song & had every line down except for the LaSalle line. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what they were saying there. So it became a mission of mine, but I wouldn't let anybody tell me what they said because I wanted to figure it out on my own. So I taped an episode & kept rewinding to that line over & over to see if I could finally hear it right. After doing this for a while my dad finally said "They say, Gee our old LaSalle ran great, now let the damn episode play."

When I was a kid and heard this song, I use to laugh at it, but now, wwhen you know the words and hear it, its not so bad at all. This was a great show to watch too.

in a tv-topics section (long ago) of the Buffalo News, some one wrote in: "What is the last line of the All..Family theme song?" The news, creatively, wrote back: "Well, the last line: "those were the days; the part in question you are inquiring about: "Gee, our old LaSalle ran great" ( referring to the time frame the show was set in )

Notice they filmed the song five or six times because of the appearance changes in Edith and Archie. But in the live recordings before an audience, they always did it each time.

well, I grew up near a school named LaSalle, so jest figured I must be misunderstandin' the words. Besides I was real young back in the late 70's and I never saw a LaSalle run

According to Wikipedia, the Lasalle was made between 1927 and 1940. The time frame referred to in the song was not the 70's but days gone by "Those were the days!"...The days of Herbert Hoover, the Lasalle, Glenn Miller,

"Gee, our old LaSalle ran great" was hard for lots of viewers to make out, when the intro was re-recorded one season, Stapleton and O'Connor were asked to pronounce it more clearly.

There's actually more to the song. It was never used on TV though, atleast not that I know of... Here's the part: "Take a little Sunday spin. Go to watch the Dodgers win.
Have yourself a dandy day that cost you under a fin.
Hair was short and skirts were long. Kate Smith really sold a song.
I just don't know what went wrong. Those were the days."
