Mike's Appendix
AIRED:
Both Archie and Gloria come home in bad moods after a hard day's work. This leads to yet another argument over women's liberation. Meanwhile, Mike has been having a pain in the side and the doctor tells him that he needs to have an appendectomy. This leads Archie and Gloria's argument to the proficiency of women doctors. Mike would rather have a more expensive male doctor rather than a cheaper woman doctor.moreless

Mike needs his appendix out, and Archie and Mike want a male doctor while Gloria wants a female one because it would cost less. Which gendered doctor will perform the operation?

Good episode. It was sexist at parts, but it was also pretty funny. Doctor Mackenzie being a woman doctor was pretty funny
  • Mike reveals that a lobotomy would have as much effect on him as an appendectomy as far as removing non-vital organs.

When Mike is forced to have his appendix surgically removed, it is discovered after much prodding that his natural bias towards having a female doctor makes him willing to pay double the cost in order to obtain a male doctor...even though he and Gloria don't even have the necessary money.

This is a stand-out episode of All in the Family for a couple of reasons: Meathead was allowed to show his true colors, which, when exposed, are just as biased as Archie's. The difference between the two men is that Meathead possesses the "soft bigotry of low expectations" whereas Archie simply is blind to his bigotry, which makes it more overt.

Secondly, we see the caring side of Archie exhibited when he offers to pay for Meathead's appendectomy which Mike can't afford, telling Gloria not to let Mike know that he's offered to take care of it for him. In addition to seeing these more obscure parts of Archie's and Meathead's natures, the audience is treated to some hilarious dialogue in the interim.moreless
