  • An interesting look at the lengths men go to to achieve standards of physical appearance.

    7.5
A young man is admitted with injuries having fallen off his bike, but after a while, it becomes clear that the organs are failing because of steroid abuse. He's determined to continue on his quest for the perfect body, ignoring all warnings about the dangerousness of the situation. It's only when he collapses after discharging himself that he's forced to face up to the damage he's doing to his body.

What stood up for me in this episode was the discussion of physical attractiveness in males - women SAY they don't care what men look like, but the guys with their shirts off at clubs to show off sixpacks get the most attention. With that kind of pressue, can you blame some men for resorting to steroids?

I miss these kinds of thought-provoking storylines on All Saints.moreless
  • Connor gets more than he bargains for.

    7.5
A patient admitted after a motorbike accident starts presenting with other symptons. Bron is assigned to him and thinks he's kind of hot until the truth is revealed.

Arnie, the patient in question treats Connor terribly and is sent home after Arnie almost breaks him arm.

Sophie is a new nurse who returns to nursing after many years off she is lacking in the current training. She feels inadequate and like quitting.

Overall it was a fairly good episode, although I could have done without the Luke's concern for Steph who was avoiding him melodrama.

And the ending, I'm not so sure what Connor said would have made Arnie return to the hospital - sounds a bit like wishful thinking.moreless
  • Sophie takes up her position on Ward 17 and Bron nurses a man with a deep secret.

    6.9
We start this week’s episode with a shot of an expensive looking house that has a large ‘For Sale’ sign out the front of it. As we enter the house, we discover that it’s Sophie’s house and she is talking to her two young boys about how she has to go back to work so that they have the money to survive. Out of all the storylines in this week’s episode, I thought that this was the most refreshing- Probably because it was the most realistic. Throughout her first shift on Ward 17, we see Sophie struggling to get a grip on modern day nursing, all the while trying to cope with working on the same ward as her husband died on. She does manage to conquer her fears by finally entering the room which Harry died in and gaining the respect of both Von and Terri. I like Sophie and I hope we see more of her in the future.

Elsewhere, Bron is nursing a man, Arnie Walker, who has had a fall off his motorbike. It becomes obvious to both Bron and the viewers that much deeper issues are going on with him and it is later revealed that he is taking steroids to enhance his physique. It was interesting to watch how this young man’s behaviour had changed over such a short period of time. It was also great to see Bron getting her first major storyline in All Saints. I’m reminded of how much I really liked Bron’s character and how strong a character she actually was.

Terri was also busy fighting admin during this episode: The issue being a sacked dinner lady who refuses to give up her job without a fight. There does seem to be an awful lot of control and interference from admin in these early episodes. Maybe it’s just because now we’re in emergency and things have changed quite significantly, but it seems to me as though Terri always has to defend her ward, the staff, budget costs and other issues to admin. Admin seem to take almost a backseat with the running of the ED, except for when something major goes wrong.

Other storylines include Steph freezing Luke out after Ben’s accusations last episode and Jared wondering why Angie Meadows hasn’t been turning up for her out-patients checkups. There was also a little bit of humour between Connor and Jared, who were shop talking about women. Jared to Connor: “Then why are you always looking at their breasts?”

What I’ve liked so far, is that screen time seems to be split more evenly between all the various characters on the show. For example, this week we had a Bron and a Sophie storyline. The first episode we got to know Terri a bit better and the week before, we saw what makes Luke tick. Life in the ED seems to be very one-track minded. Usually only Charlotte and Frank get the main storylines, and recently, Mike has received all the limelight. I tend to like a bit more variety added in.

Above all, this was an average episode. I thought it was slightly better than last week’s episode and there was certainly nothing that I could really complain about. But the only storyline that really sparked my interest was the Sophie one. Next week’s episode sounds exciting though.moreless
  • New nurse.

    5.7
The story in a nutshell. Sophie Williams joins the team at ward 17, a patient on steroids ends up in the ward and Von gets a surprise.

I thought the episode was very character developing. Sister Terri showing that she's just as human has the next person. Sophie finding it hard to vind her turn in the nursing world again and hard to enter the room her husband died in?

This episode sends a clear message that steroids kill. The best and funniest, but the most sweetest moment of the episode is when Mrs Clemenko leaves and gives grumpy Von a going away present.

These are all very common and real situations. Which makes the show so great.

Von reminds me a lot of a later character in the show 'Frank'. But underneath, she's a softy too.

Overal good and strong acting from everyone, especially from Georgie and Judith.moreless
