  • Mike’s drug addiction is revealed, and an MVA gives way to a murder mystery.

    7.1
I thought that this episode was okay, but again, nothing spectacular. I didn’t hate it, and there was certainly nothing to complain about, except for the fact that all the storylines were very predictable, but it wasn’t exactly attention grabbing either- Which I expected it to be, given that one staff member’s drug addiction came to light and a patient’s brother committed murder. It seems to me that the last few episodes have really been filler ones- They seem to be there just to kill some time until the writers can wrap up Mike’s departure and until Spence gets back so that Charlotte’s pregnancy can unfold some more.

This week Cate brings Mike’s drug addiction to Frank’s attention. Frank confronts Mike about it, and of course, he denies it- Or rather, tries to dodge the question completely. For me, this storyline was probably the highlight of this week’s episode, even if it was a little predictable. At least the storyline went somewhere and there was a point to it. It shall be interesting to see how Mike leaves next week and what Jack’s reaction is. Jack really seems to have established some kind of friendship with Mike and I’m wondering how this will effect how he works with Vincent, when he gets back from Canada.

Elsewhere, a woman and her husband are brought in following an MVA. The husband cannot be revived and the woman refuses to give her consent for an autopsy. Then the woman’s brother turns up and it is revealed that at a party, the night before the accident, the brother slipped five ecstasy tablets into the husband’s drink to kill him. I thought this storyline was okay, but like I said before, extremely predictable. As soon as the woman’s brother turned up, it was obvious that he had killed the husband. However, I was glad to get a bit of background info on Erica. It would actually be really interesting if her brother was brought into the ED from prison- Perhaps a prison riot or something?

Von has her own office now, as the patient discharge nurse, and Frank is not happy about it! It was great to see Von having a bit of a storyline this week- I only wish that it had been longer. It seems to me that Von usually has one-two scenes each episode now and that’s it. And it’s such a shame because when she does get a storyline, usually they are of the highest quality.

Again, I’m going to have to complain about the whole Charlotte-pregnancy storyline. It really doesn’t seem to be going anywhere and there really wasn’t any need to write another one in for her. Perhaps this will all change next week as Spence arrives back from Africa, but for now, things are very boring on this front. She appeared at the start of the episode for an obstetrics appointment, and at the end when the gang went to Cougars for drinks after work.

Next week Spence arrives back and not everyone is pleased to see him- At least according to the episode summary. At a guess, I’m going to say that it’s Sean who doesn’t want Spence back. He seemed to be very concerned about Charlotte this week, being her knight in shining armour and all. Perhaps also Frank won’t be best pleased to see Spence because of the possible distractions for Charlotte from her work and I also have a theory that perhaps Zoë knows Spence from way back. But we’ll see.moreless
  • Cate dobs Mike into Frank. Two interesting medical storylines.

    7.5
A man is admitted having pushed a fishing hook into his penis for an 'extreme pleasure' challenge. Thought the looks on Bart and Sean's faces was classic, as was Cate's laughing at them. Was really impressed with Alexandra Davies this week, Cate showed spunk both with the hook storyline and confronting Mike.

Cate tells Frank what she saw - Mike doing drugs - and Frank confronts Mike about it, who promptly and catagorically denies it. Well, duh. In the end, Frank gives Mike an ultimatum: resolve his problem, or be fired. Interesting to see what happens next week. Poor Jack, looks like he's going to lose another mentor - and it seemed like he was almost fond of Mike at this point.

Meanwhile, a woman is admitted after having crashed her car. Her husband dies, but thecircumstances don't seem to add up. The way this storyline was concluded was very well done with a twist I didn't see coming.

Also liked that we got to hear a little of Erica's backstory - interested in seeing how her relationship with Bart plays out as a result. And Von showed a spunk that's been missing for a while.

The main downsides for this episode were Gabrielle and Charlotte. Gabrielle rarely seems to do anything of merit, although when she does, she shows potential to be a great character. I case of 'too many cooks', or in this case 'too many characters', I think. And Charlotte made a brief appearance, ostensibly for a checkup but mostly to complain about being fat - an extremely bad moral message for pregnany women who may be struggling with their weight gain, I thought. She seemed pointless and flirty, not at all like Charlotte. And WTF is with her flirting with Sean?

Untimately, that's why I gave this episode 7.5 instead of 9. The way the AS PTO are handling the Charlotte storyline is insulting, IMHO.moreless
