Rene finds himself living as a love slave to the Communist resistance. Gruber and Von Strohm try to collect the painting, but Edith is unsure of its whereabouts. The pair agree to pay for a statue of Rene, who is assumed killed in the windmill explosion. Flick reveals his new face and tries to swindle Edith out of the painting. Von Klinkerhoffen takes Gruber and Von Strohm hunting, where they shoot Rene, who is escaping from the resistance by disguising himself under a elkskin bedspread.moreless
  • Some good plot points, but tired jokes.

This late in the series it seems that the scriptwriters were getting somewhat lazy when it came to inventing jokes or funny dialogue. Most of the punchlines you can see coming two or three lines in advance. Crabtree's mangled English has lost its surprise and passed its schoolboy humour sell-by date. Still, the episode has some good points. Carmen Silvera keeps getting better as the show goes on, there are some nice surreal images, most notably Ren's escape when he is disguised as an elk. In one scene it even pokes fun at its own logic. When the different ladies describe Ren as they remember him (fat and balding), they suddenly start to wonder what they saw in him. That's a question every viewer had been asking himself for nine years.moreless

    • René: I have been taken prisoner by Louise of the Communist Resistance, who has announced that I am to be her love slave. Naturally my quick thinking has saved the day. For the past 24 hours I have been excusing myself with a headache. I had contemplated taking her sleeping pills to end it all, but knowing my luck I would just end up with a real headache.

    • Herr Flick: Prepare yourself for a surprise. Von Smallhausen: A big one! Edith: I am prepared, I hope. Herr Flick: I am not really Otto Flick of the Gestapo, I am in fact a member of the British Intelligence Service. My real name is Basil de Vere Courtney. Von Smallhausen: An I am George Marmaduke St John Fotherington Smythe. But you can call me Buffy.
