It doesn't get much worse for Rene then being caught for an act of sabotage done by mistake by the most idiotic German officer ever, Capt. Geering. This leads to yet more farce with terrible disguises, the prisoners being overloaded with hacksaws, the beginning of 'it is I, leclerc'. And the only one who can release them is stuck in there with them and because the general is unhappy and wants a scapegoat Rene is made an example of which leads to more deals enabling him to stay alive but of course the plan almost goes wrong like all good plans on this show.
